I would go further and say that in many cases Islam is not even a genuine choice for many people. We know this from how brutally those who try to leave it are treated.

This is exactly why this ideology needs to be scrutinised openly and fearlessly. It has been shielded from criticism for far too long, often kept obscure enough to allow some of its backward norms and practices to continue unchallenged.
