“I can face the winter with calm. Crisp and sparkling days, long pleasant evenings, cheery fires. Good work shall be done this winter. Life shall be lived well. The end of the summer is not the end of the world. Here’s to October.” ~A.A.Milne #October#October1
Just found out have been shortlisted for columnist of the year in the Society of Editors press awards. At my age. With my politics. Truly surprised. And elated.
I remember Menzies Campbell as a fellow Fife MP and a friend who was always great to work with across party lines, who shared a strong sense of social justice and a belief in international cooperation. One of the great leaders of our times and a decent, compassionate man. RIP
Mair Russell Jones, a Welsh codebreaker at Bletchley Park, used her linguistic talents to help crack German Enigma messages during WWII.
"For 4 years I'd done nothing but thought about German codes, while I worked, while I ate, while I slept."
Let’s remember heroines like her:
“Our thermometer hangs in the kitchen garden. It gives you an excuse in summer for going and leaning against the fruit trees. “Let’s go and look at the thermometer” you say. What you really mean is, “Let’s go and see if any fruit has blown down in the night.”~A.A.Milne #fruit
On this day, 105 years ago, the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was certified, granting white women the right to vote.
Black and Brown women had to wait decades longer.
We've made progress toward equality in so many areas, but we're not done yet.

My Shero, Althea Gibson, was born on this day, 98 years ago.
As we honor the 75th anniversary of Althea breaking the color barrier in tennis at this year's U.S. Open, may we always remember her unmatched courage and strength, and how she blazed a trail for so many to follow.

Calling time on this one. I was objecting to D. Telegraph’s use of the word “empire” (as in A Rayner’s property “empire”). I too have problems with some of her policies, but I really don’t think she is biggest obstacle to equity in uk. Thanks to those who disagreed without abuse
No prizes for identifying the location of today’s library visit🏖️🌊☀️The children’s library is stunning at Layton. Always a joy to return to Blackpool for some seaside storytelling action🙌📚
Christopher Robin came down from the Forest feeling all sunny and careless. But when he got to the bridge and saw all the animals there, then he knew that it wasn’t that kind of afternoon, but the other kind, when you wanted to DO something. ~A.A.Milne #saturdaymorning
