This is a mola mola, the ocean sunfish. One of the heaviest bony fish on the planet. He can weigh as much as a car, drift for decades through open water, bask sideways at the surface soaking in sun he’ll never feel again.

And here he is: strung up by a single rope through the jaw, swinging over a concrete dock while men stand around checking their phones, waiting to weigh him like cargo💔

Mola mola aren’t even a commercial target for most fleets, they’re usually bycatch, animals that had no reason to die except that they surfaced near the wrong net. He didn’t threaten anyone. He wasn’t in anyone’s way. He was just enormous, and slow, and alive, in a stretch of ocean humans decided to drag a line through.

There’s no ceremony here, no need, no hunger being solved that a thousand other foods couldn’t solve. Just a rope, a scale, and a species that will be sold in pieces by the afternoon.

And that, surely, is the most disturbing part of the whole argument. If a priest genuinely believes a child is in immediate danger, he is apparently left with a choice between obeying the Church and protecting the child. If he breaks the seal to save the child, he risks his standing in the Church. If he keeps the seal, the child remains at risk.

That is not a satisfactory safeguarding system.

I appreciate that Catholics regard the seal of Confession as inviolable. But from the standpoint of the child, the distinction is brutally simple: there's an adult who knows that a child is being abused, and there's a rule telling that adult that he must remain silent.

We rightly expect teachers, doctors, therapists, social workers and other professionals to understand that confidentiality has limits where a child is at risk. Why should a priest be placed in a different moral category?

And if the answer is that the sacrament itself collapses unless the priest can promise absolute secrecy, then we have to confront the uncomfortable conclusion that the preservation of the sacrament is being placed above the protection of the child.

I do not say that lightly. But the child has no theological argument to make, no canon lawyer to represent him and no choice about what happens next.
He simply needs an adult to protect him. That should be where the Church's priorities are beyond dispute.
