For far too long, India extended a lot of unearned and unreciprocated moral decency to Pakistan. Despite being the constant victim of Pakistani terrorism, Indians always drew a line between the military and Pakistani civil society, believing that at least some rational voices across the border still valued humanity.

Though no one in India ever expected any integrity from the Pakistan Armed Forces. They have long been known as master deceivers, saying one thing while doing another, training terrorists while pretending to pursue peace, destabilising neighbours while talking about regional stability. That duplicity was always understood. No illusions there.

The real heartbreak, the final blow, came from the so-called moderates.

For instance, Najam Sethi and Hamid Mir had, for years, enjoyed respect in India. They were seen as people who, despite the noise, could hold on to some shred of moral clarity. Their columns were read, their voices amplified, their presence welcomed in Indian discourse. Even many of their goof-ups were overlooked, in the hope that engagement might pave a better path.

Then came the Pahalgam terror attack, laying both of them bare.

Over two dozen Hindu tourists and a Christian man, chosen for execution after being identified as non-Muslims, and a local Kashmiri Muslim for simply resisting the shameful act. It was pure, unambiguous, Pakistan-sanctioned Islamist terror, on the lines of exactly what Najam Sethi himself had predicted after the Jaffar Express hijacking, blaming it on India, because didn’t the Indian NSA once warn Pakistan that if it does another Mumbai, it will lose Balochistan? How dare India have the audacity to threaten retaliation instead of submitting to perpetual bloodshed?

So Sethi and Mir decided to do the following, without a shred of evidence, based on sheer bias and assumptions.

Not mourning.

Not condemnation.

But peddling the most vile, cynical narrative that the Pahalgam attack was a false-flag operation by India. They amplified the lie that Modi would murder his own civilians for political gain. That wasn’t just tone-deaf. It was an unforgivable betrayal.

That was the moment the last thread of goodwill snapped.

India had grieved for Pakistani children after the 2014 APS massacre, a consequence of the Pakistan Army’s own misadventures. Still, there was deep sorrow in India. People lit candles. Because they were kids. Because grief was human.

And mind you, this was after enduring the Mumbai attacks. When 26/11 happened, when Indians were slaughtered in a cold, coordinated assault, the reaction across much of Pakistan was denial and celebration. Sweets were distributed. Similar conspiracy theories were peddled.

The same grotesque pattern has now repeated after Pahalgam. But what stood out was that this time it was the so-called Pakistani progressive at the forefront, not only giving cover fire to the blood-baying extremist on the street, but also justifying his genocidal hatred for Hindus.

Some of us weren’t very surprised, though. A Punjabi Pakistani, shaped by decades of army-led indoctrination and supremacist ideology, can never be a friend of Indians. That’s not prejudice. That’s just pattern recognition. India chose for too long to ignore that reality, investing goodwill where none was deserved.

So now, Indians are done being guilt-tripped. Done being asked to show empathy to a country that has none for them. Done distinguishing between the general in uniform and the apologist in a blazer. Done pretending there’s a difference between the killer in boots and the coward in a suit. The masks are off. The “moderates” have shown their true colours.

The Najam Sethi and Hamid Mir types chose their sides too, and it’s not one that respects facts, grief or human life.

Here onwards, India will only mourn its own dead. And it will only protect its own living. It will no longer let its grief pass through the approval of those who never deserved its empathy in the first place.
