what are some of the biggest shifts that relaxed your depression? Looking for anything from realizations to new habits to practices to just getting a new job. crucially though I am mostly curious about “shift” moments, where things were at least 20% better than they were before
tech bros and finance guys make fun of the psych and philosophy majors in school then spend the next 25 years reading basic pop-psych and philosophy books declaring them to be revolutionary
1/ Listening non-judgmentally is not something therapists learn from a book or class. It takes years of work
We can listen without judging because we have examined the dark corners of our own souls in personal psychotherapy. What you think shocking, we know to be simply human
Do not go to psychotherapy thinking it will affirm your understanding of yourself & others
If your perceptions & understandings served you, you’d have no need for therapy
Real psychotherapy will shake your soul to its foundation
And if it’s not real psychotherapy—why bother?
Ignore the misleading description of psychedelic therapy in the title ("adding psychotherapy to drug therapy"). This is a very reasonable take by Tom Insel.
