Here’s a message the media doesn’t want you to hear from the @GOP:

To gay Americans: you’re free to marry who you want (if you want), without the government standing in your way. But that doesn’t mean men should compete with women in sports.

To black Americans: the media has tried to convince you for decades that Republicans don’t care about your communities. We want for you what we want for every American: safe neighborhoods, clean streets, good jobs, a better life for your children, and a justice system that treats everyone equally – regardless of your skin color or your political beliefs.

To every *legal* immigrant: you’re like my parents. You deserve the opportunity to secure a better life for your children in America. But our message illegal immigrants is also this: we will return you to your country of origin, not because you’re all bad people, but because you broke the law.

To Gen Z: you’re going to be the generation that actually saves our country. You want to stand up to the man? Try calling yourself a conservative. Say you want to get married, have kids, & teach them to pledge allegiance to our country.

My message to everyone who disagrees with us is this: we will still defend to the death your right to say it.

Because that’s who we are as Americans.

Spending 20-33 years of your young years working for someone else just because you need the visa to be able to stay at your home. This is not freedom. This is slavery. You don’t have power to even sit at your home and enjoy freedom.

It might go till 40. And then when you are old, you don’t have enough energy to build your dreams.

So many talented people are in the same category, c suite, top VCs, most Indian people in tech.

The employment based immigration quota in the United State is 140,000/year fixed. The State Dept publishes an openly discriminatory document called 'visa bulletin' which determines who gets these permanent residencies. Let's see if you understand this document and can determine who will get the permanent residency first out of these four scenarios, based on the July 2024 visa bulletin (Pic attached for reference)

Note: Mexico means for people who are born in Mexico, not Mexican citizens.

Scenario 1: An Indian guy, who was born in India, who came to the United States to study after high school. Went through four years of pre-med, four years of medicine school, and finished 8 years of internship and residency to become a neurosurgeon. By the time he files his immigration petition, he has already lived in the United States for 16 years, obeyed all the laws, and has paid thousands of dollars in taxes over the years. Because of his qualification and articles he published over the years, his immigration petition gets approved in April 2022 in the 1st category.
Education: MD from USA
Has been been living in US: 16 years
Immigration petition approved: April 2022 in the 1st category

Scenario 2: For this scenario you can take any country other than whose name you don't see in the picture but for an example, let's use Pakistan. A guy from Pakistan, who was born in Pakistan, who did four years of Bachelors in Computer Science at a domestic university. He got a job at a local software company and worked there for one year. He applied to a US based software firm and got recruited. The guy has never been to the United States before and hasn't paid any taxes to the United States yet. The US based software firm files immigration petition for this guy and it gets approved in Jan 2023 in the 3rd category.
Education: BS from foreign university
Time spent in US: 0 days
Immigration petition approved: Jan 2023 in the 3rd category

Scenario 3: An Irish girl, who was born in India during two years her parents were on a business trip. She came to the United States from Ireland for her studies after finishing her high-school in Ireland. She finished her undergrad, grad and doctorate studies in the United States and is now doing critical research related to cancer immunology. By the time she files her immigration petition, she has already lived in the United States for 13 years, followed all the laws and paid thousands of dollars in taxes over the years. Because of her qualification and research articles she published her immigration petition gets approved in May 2022 in the 1st category.
Education: Ph.D. from USA
Has been been living in US: 13 years
Immigration petition approved: November 2022 in the 1st category

Scenario 4: A guy and girl, both from India and born in India, come to the United States for masters in Cybersecurity. After finishing their studies, they get a job at a leading cloud provider where they are responsible for securing data all the Federal agencies like FBI, NSA are storing at this cloud provider. After working for 2 years, this company filed their immigration petition which got approved in 2nd category in November 2012. They both get married. They saved and made a lot of wise financial investments over the years from their salary. In 2022, they decided to start their own business and apply for permanent residency in the 5th Unreserved category. Requirements of this category is to invest at least 1 million dollars and create 10 full-time jobs. They actually invested 1.1 million dollars and created 15 full-time jobs. Their another immigration petition gets approved in May 2023 in the 5th Unreserved category.

In summary, by July 2024, this couple had lived in the United States for 16 years, followed all the laws, paid thousands of dollars in taxes, invested more than a million dollars they saved after paying taxes, created 15 full-time jobs and had not one but two immigration petitions approved. One in 2nd category approved in November 2012 and another in 5th Unreserved category approved in May 2023.

Has been been living in US: 15 years
Immigration petition approved:
1) 2nd category approved in November 2012
2) 5th Unreserved category approved in May 2020.
Invested 1million+ in US and create 15 full-time jobs

My family moved to the US when I was 8, but by the time I turned 20, my dad was still on an H1B (waiting to get processed for a green card).

Once I turned 21, I would age out as his dependent, despite the fact that I basically grew up in the US.

I thought I'd have to become a code monkey after college, and even that only if I was lucky enough to win the H1B lottery.

Otherwise, back to India.

I had become a huge fan of @paulg's essays in college. I was actually depressed that my desire to start a startup or do something entrepreneurial was basically hopeless.

Working on the promising podcast I was doing as a side project? A beyond impossible pipe dream.

Even after 9 years, my dad wasn't able to get a green card - and the lines were only getting longer over time. I figured I'd be an old man before I could quit some FANG job and build my own thing.

By some miracle, COVID travel restrictions cleared out the lines, and I got my green card literally months before I would have aged out.

If not for this unbelievable coincidence, I would not be hosting the podcast.

In the best case, I would be shifting pixels around in the 3rd sub-sub-menu of some big tech software.

I'm incredibly grateful I made it through.

But it's unconscionable that we put the kids of high skilled immigrants through all this anxiety, and in many cases make them repeat the nerve-racking indentured life trajectory that they had to watch their parents go through.
