i noticed ... when people add new responsibilities to their life ... kids or a spouse ... everything you have going on as their friend becomes an inconvenience & you have to understand because you dont have the same priorities .. your life is just easier and you should understand
Of course it’s okay to say no. Every normal adult knows this except for the person who came to Twitter to paint their friend as a bad person for even extending the invite..lol.
Celebrating major milestones is just a pricey thing in life. You won’t go through life avoiding those costs unless you’re willingly to accept no one taking on that cost for you when it’s time to celebrate you.
Communicating that you’re opting out/declining the invite is the first step in setting standards in the friendship.
last winter my friends and I all left our phones at the apartment and went out in nyc on a friday, from like 11am to 4am. all we had was a disposable camera, credit card, and a napkin with some emergency phone numbers written down.
we got lost, had to ask for directions, made small talk with strangers, made new friends, went to ten different bars. no joke, it was the best day ever. can't recommend enough.
2nd annual no phone day city crawl will be happening
as a single childless woman, you can show up for countless bridal showers, weddings, baby showers, kid's birthday parties, anniversary dinners etc. but if you want even a modicum of reciprocation suddenly it's mortifying and beyond the pale. lol ok.
