Why I admire Annamalai is that he is truly a different kind of politician.

I saw accusations that the state government had illegitimately transferred temple lands to individuals.

I also saw the Minister clearly explaining why this was not the case, by narrating the complete history.

For everyone to understand, I have given below the English version of Annamalai’s post:

It is essential to understand the factual and legal position regarding the issue concerning 3,084 acres of land in Karur district.

The lands under discussion here are not all "temple properties." The majority are related to Inam lands. These Inam lands were granted as endowments by the Vijayanagara Empire and other rulers to archakas (priests), employees, and others serving in temples.

Later, inquiries were conducted under the Tamil Nadu Inam (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act, 1963 (Act 30 of 1963), and ryotwari pattas were issued to eligible individuals.

Based on these pattas, thousands of farmers have been legally cultivating, maintaining, and enjoying these lands for many decades.

However, during the previous DMK regime, these Inam lands that had already received pattas were clubbed together with temple lands and classified under zero value.

This resulted in a situation where they could not be registered through sale deeds, causing farmers to face numerous difficulties in obtaining loans, transferring property, and other matters.

If the current TVK government's action is aimed at lawfully removing the registration restrictions on these Inam lands that already hold ryotwari pattas, thereby restoring the legal rights of those farmers, it should be welcomed.

Portraying this as an act of handing over temple lands to encroachers would create a misleading narrative.

At the same time, there is no disagreement that genuine temple properties should not be illegally transferred to private individuals.

It is the government's responsibility to both protect temple assets and safeguard the rights of farmers who have obtained legal ownership.

Therefore, we support the Tamil Nadu government's action to confirm the ownership of Inam lands that have been lawfully granted ryotwari pattas.

This is an important step that will resolve the livelihood concerns of thousands of farmers and address long standing registration issues.

Watched Annamalai's speech.

​It was marked by rare candour and authentic communication. He lucidly explained his vision for the future of Tamil Nadu, speaking about the need to bring a lot of domain experts and technocrats into the government and administration.

​He mentioned that there is no point in only the Chief Minister, three dozen ministers, or 234 MLAs being good. Among the 30,000 local body members, everyone needs to be trained, as governance starts from there.

​Furthermore, he stated that politics cannot be a lifelong profession. From the Chief Minister down to local body members, everyone should have a preset tenure. Only then will the party be able to continuously attract fresh talent and endure for a long time to come.

​On identity, he emphasized that it is never a question of being an Indian or a Tamilian. Tamil Nadu is unique because both identities are equally valid. We are Tamil people who are an inseparable part of India.

​Under his vision, every single person, from Ministers to MLAs to local body members would be trained in administration and ethics. It is being started as a people's movement and will be converted into a political party before the next elections.

​Annamalai has a long and steep path ahead, but his interest in the betterment of the political and public space in Tamil Nadu is genuine.

I recently spent 2 weeks in China.

6 cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an, Zhangjiajie, Chongqing and Chengdu.

I went there with curiosity.

Like many Indians, I had heard a lot about China through media, social media and conversations. I expected to see progress, maybe discover some business ideas, and understand what the country is actually building.

I came back with a very uncomfortable feeling.

Not because I found a business idea for myself.

But because I saw 100 things that governments can do when infrastructure, tourism, transport, urban planning and civic systems are treated seriously.

I travelled within China by flights, trains, cars and local transport. The infrastructure was honestly stunning.

Clean cities. Smooth roads. High-speed trains. Well-managed traffic. Public spaces that actually feel designed for people. Tourist destinations that are built, maintained and promoted like national assets.

And then I kept thinking about India.

We keep comparing ourselves to China. Our media keeps telling us how India is catching up, how China is restrictive, how we are better in so many ways.

After spending time there and speaking to people, I realised how much of that narrative is just comfort food.

China is not perfect. No country is.

But on infrastructure, execution, tourism, civic discipline and quality of urban life, they are not 5 years ahead of us.

They are decades ahead.

The saddest part for me was the currency.

Everything felt expensive. Not because China was insanely expensive, but because the rupee has weakened so much that even normal spending starts feeling heavy. As an Indian taxpayer, that genuinely hurt.

We pay taxes. We work hard. We talk about becoming a global power.

But where is the quality of life?

Where is the civic sense?

Where is the infrastructure that makes daily life easier?

Where is the tourism vision beyond religious tourism?

I met travellers from other countries who were excited to visit China because they wanted to see its progress. When I asked about India, many had no real desire to visit. Not out of hate. India simply was not on their aspirational travel list.

That should bother us.

Even the so-called “closed internet” surprised me. We are told people there are missing out because they don’t use Google, Instagram, WhatsApp or Facebook.

But China has built its own digital ecosystem. Payments, maps, transport, messaging, shopping, everything works inside their own infrastructure. People did not seem to feel deprived. They seemed adapted.

Again, this is not a hate post.

I love India. That is exactly why this trip bothered me.

Patriotism cannot only be about saying we are great.

Real patriotism is having the courage to admit where we are falling behind.

China made me realise one thing very clearly:

India’s potential is not the problem.

Execution is.

And unless we stop comforting ourselves with comparisons and start demanding better infrastructure, better governance, better tourism, cleaner cities and a higher quality of life, we will keep celebrating the idea of progress instead of actually living it.

Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Tarun Kumar in Uttam Nagar. It’s heartbreaking that something as small as a child throwing a water balloon during Holi could escalate into such violence.
