A statewide Air Quality Alert remains in place, along with heat advisories for Wednesday. Canadian wildfires, north of the Minnesota arrowhead continue to burn, out of control, and are spreading. A review of the Wednesday morning monitors is showing AQI impacts in the Upper Peninsula and Upper Lower ranging from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) to Very Unhealthy. It is possible some hourly reading could reach Hazardous. Those conditions will persist and slowly migrate southwards towards the Michigan/Indiana border throughout the day. With the persistent and aggressive nature of these fires, a statewide Air Quality Alert will remain in place through Thursday with a good possibility of extending into Friday.
Health advisors recommend limiting outdoor time, making sure to keep windows closed.
Consider setting your HVAC system to “On” instead of “Auto.” This will constantly recirculate air inside the home rather than drawing in smoky outdoor air.
Use portable HEPA rated air filters in common areas and bedrooms while sleeping.
Cloth masks, dust masks, surgical masks and bandanas do not provide protection from the extremely fine particles in wildfire smoke. The best protection is a properly fitted N95 or KN95 type of mask.
Monitor local media or visit https://t.co/bpeyDjmMpN for additional updates.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy is closely monitoring the effects of approximately 800 active wildfires across Canada and Minnesota. Plumes of smoke from these wildfires are expected to drift into the Upper Peninsula this evening and sink south into the Lower Peninsula overnight. Officials have issued a statewide air quality alert for the entire state of Michigan for Wednesday, July 15 due to elevated fine particulate. The advisory forecasts a hazard level of USG—Orange AQI which indicates “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” such as those with heart disease or respiratory conditions like asthma.
Particles from wildfire smoke can cause minor symptoms, such as mild eye or throat irritation, or more serious heart and lung issues in some cases, according to the National Weather Service. Wildfire smoke particles are especially dangerous for children, older adults, pregnant people and those with heart or respiratory conditions.
Residents can monitor conditions through EGLE’s MiAir Quality Index Dashboard at the following link: MiAir Dashboard. Residents may also sign up for automated alerts through the EnviroFlash System at EnviroFlash signup.

The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for the State of Michigan warning of dangerously hot conditions through the end of the week. The potential for heat related illness increases significantly during extreme heat and humidity events. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates. Check with local emergency management officials for information on cooling center availability.
