Deeply saddened by the passing of our nation’s revered environmentalist and Padma Shri awardee, Saalumarada Thimmakka amma, at the blessed age of 114.
Fondly known as the mother of more than thousands of trees that she nurtured & planted, Thimmakka amma embodied a life of service, simplicity, and devotion to Mother Nature. I cherish the memory of my personal interaction with her during my tenure as a police officer in Karnataka, a moment that left a lasting impression on me.
Though she has ascended to her heavenly abode, the countless trees she lovingly nurtured will continue to whisper her legacy for generations to come.
Om Shanti, Amma.
When Lord Shiva (Shankar) destroyed the demon named Tripura, He was filled with immense joy and began to dance in ecstasy. At the beginning of this divine dance, He did not spread out His arms because He knew that doing so would disturb the balance of the universe and could lead to its destruction. However, as the dance continued, Shiva became so deeply immersed in bliss that He lost all awareness and began to dance freely. The entire creation started trembling with His movements.
At that very moment, to protect the world, Goddess Parvati also began a graceful and loving dance — the Lasya Nritya. Her gentle rhythm brought balance to the cosmos, calming Shiva’s fierce energy. This restored harmony to the universe, and Lord Shiva gradually returned to serenity.
Because of this divine dance, Shiva is known as the first cosmic dancer — Nataraja, the Lord of Dance.
Historically, the artistic form of Nataraja evolved around the 7th century under the Pallavas, and later between the 8th to 10th centuries under the Chola dynasty of South India. The grand Nataraja idol enshrined at Chidambaram Temple, built by Maharishi Patanjali, is considered the most authentic representation. Patanjali envisioned Shiva in this form as Yogeshwara, the Lord of Yoga.
In His Nataraja form, Lord Shiva is shown dancing upon a dwarf demon, symbolizing the triumph of knowledge over ignorance. This dwarf is not a physical deformity but represents spiritual ignorance. The one who remains ignorant is considered small in stature before wisdom. The joy experienced after overcoming ignorance is expressed through Shiva’s Ananda Tandava — the Dance of Bliss.
In this dance pose, Shiva’s left hand holds fire, symbolizing destruction — because He is the destroyer who ends negativity and invites Brahma to recreate anew. One of His legs is lifted, representing freedom and the forward motion of life. The entire pose radiates rhythm, balance, and movement — symbols of change and cosmic continuity.
You may have seen many images of Nataraja, but have you ever noticed the demon beneath His feet? The dwarf lying under Shiva’s right foot is Apasmara, also known as Muyalaka. Apasmara represents ignorance, forgetfulness, and disease. Interestingly, even today, epilepsy is called Apasmara in Sanskrit.
In Yoga, there is a pose called Natarajasana, and regular practice of it is said to help overcome epilepsy — symbolically suppressing the “Apasmara” within.
According to one legend, Apasmara was a dwarf demon who considered himself all-powerful and looked down upon others. As described in the Skanda Purana, he was immortal and possessed the power to steal anyone’s consciousness. Misusing this gift, he caused immense suffering by spreading confusion, forgetfulness, and disease.
Once, a group of sages, proud of their austerities and spiritual powers, were performing rituals with their wives. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati appeared before them disguised as beggars. Seeing the divine pair, the wives instinctively rose to offer respect, leaving the rituals incomplete. This enraged the arrogant sages, who created venomous serpents to attack the beggar. Shiva easily subdued them.
Then, the sages summoned Apasmara to attack. In some versions, they themselves created him through their powers. Apasmara used his energy to confuse Goddess Parvati, causing her to faint. Witnessing this, Shiva became furious. He struck His drum — the Damru — fourteen times, and the sound waves shattered Apasmara’s strength. Shiva then took His magnificent Nataraja form, placing one foot firmly upon Apasmara to subdue his power while raising the other in divine balance.
He did not kill Apasmara, because his death would have eliminated ignorance from the world — making knowledge easily attainable without effort. Then, learning would lose its value, and humility would disappear. Thus, Shiva chose to keep Apasmara alive but subdued, so that wisdom would always require dedication and reverence.
