Personally, started using Deepseek Pro with max reasoning when Codex usage runs out. Takes a lot of hand-holding to achieve anything meaningful but you can often get several hours of work done for under $1.

It's nowhere near as capable as 5.6-sol but max reasoning will delegate tasks to subagents at least using OpenCode with Deepseek. Honestly its not great, but better than nothing. Use ChatGPT with Pro reasoning to help write the plans for Deepseek.

Other than that, sort of stuck and have started doing as much stuff I can manually myself just to give Codex a head start on the tasks I do run with it when I have usage.

Unfortunately i've heard Claude usage is even worse than Codex but I haven't personally tried Claude yet. My hope is that as they scale towards 50M to 100M users on Codex (think were at 10-11M now) that economies of scale can make compute more cost-effective and increase available usage, but thats sort of a pipe-dream given how subsidized compute already is on the subscriptions.

Just used my 4 resets back to back last week working on a game engine, spent 5.5B tokens in 5 days, would have cost ~$120k via the API. Its actually insane.

Really the only hope is:

A) Chinese models get better and hold firm on price
B) Local models somehow break the paradox of bigger model = more intelligence and get better on consumer hardware
C) Some combo of A and B

Just really hope they don't price the common man out of it altogether at some point but I do think the Chinese models will improve enough to prevent that from happening. Its the fucking wild west right.
