In fact, your approach is a very short-sighted and emotional way to look at national security.

And don’t forget, we have walked this road before in this country. The Bakassi Boys boomeranged in the South East. They started out with huge public support as community vigilantes fighting local crime.

But because they had no legal boundaries or government accountability, they quickly mutated into a brutal force for extortion, settling personal scores, and political killings. When you arm non-state actors, the weapons always end up terrorizing the very same communities they were meant to protect.

My point is clear: What is their jurisdiction? What can they do? What can they not do? How is their work different from the police? What is the law binding their activities?

When a country allows a regional figure to arm his followers, it shows the system is failing. The allegiance of these young men belongs to the man who gathered them.

If a clash happens between the state government and the founder tomorrow, the loyalty of these armed men will go straight to their founder. That is a perfect recipe for building a private militia.

We will not sit on a time bomb because some people have decided to sell their conscience because Sunday is Yoruba. He is no more of a Yoruba man than me.

If the real plan is to protect our communities, the right route is to fight for State Police. That ensures local men are trained and monitored under a strict national law. Letting ethnic champions raise armed groups does not secure anything. It just prepares different factions for conflict.
