In 1992, Enron, a prominent U.S. company, planned to establish a power plant in Dabhol, Maharashtra, with a proposed investment of $2 billion. However, fierce local opposition stalled the project, leading Enron to file a $600 million compensation lawsuit against the Indian government.

Under the Vajpayee government, Harish Salve, a distinguished Indian lawyer, was appointed to defend India’s interests in this high-stakes international arbitration.

Shockingly, P. Chidambaram, a prominent Congress leader, served as Enron’s legal counsel, advocating against India’s interests.

When the UPA government came to power in 2004, with Chidambaram as Finance Minister, he could no longer directly represent Enron but continued to provide legal advice, reportedly favouring the company.

In a stunning move, the UPA government removed Harish Salve from the case and appointed Khawar Qureshi, a UK-based lawyer of Pakistani origin, to represent India.

The decision to entrust a sensitive case involving billions in taxpayer money to a foreign lawyer with ties to Pakistan raised serious questions about the Congress-led government’s judgment and priorities.

Despite India’s strong position in the arbitration, the questionable decisions - Chidambaram’s prior ties to Enron and the appointment of Qureshi led to a predictable outcome: India lost the case.

The government was forced to pay substantial settlements of $800 million to Bechtel & General Electric, who had acquired Enron’s stakes after its bankruptcy. Additionally, Qureshi was paid exorbitant legal fees, further burdening Indian taxpayers.

Notably, Khawar Qureshi later represented Pakistan in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case at the International Court of Justice, underscoring the irony of Congress’s choice.
And Guess who represented India - Harish Salve, who won the case and stayed the death sentence of Yadav, along with getting him consular access, only for a Fee of Rs 1.

This episode, often downplayed by the media, highlights a disturbing pattern of mismanagement and questionable loyalties under the Congress-led UPA.

Their handling of the Dabhol case reflects a legacy of decisions that prioritised foreign interests and compromised India’s sovereignty, leaving taxpayers to bear the cost of their failures.

இந்த ஜூன் மாதத்திலேயே, சென்னையில் மூதாட்டியிடம் சங்கிலி பறிக்க முயன்ற ஒரு வடமாநில இளைஞர் ஒருவர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டார். கடந்த மாதம், தாம்பரம் அருகே இளம்பெண்ணிடம் பாலியல் தொல்லை செய்த வழக்கு, திருவள்ளூர் அருகே வீட்டில் தனியாக இருந்த பெண்ணிடம் அத்துமீறிய வழக்கு, சென்னை வேளச்சேரி பேருந்து நிலை���ம் அருகே 61 வயது பெண், கூட்டு பாலியல் வன்கொடுமை செய்யப்பட்ட வழக்கு, சென்னை வேளச்சேரியில் மனநலம் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்ணுக்கு பாலியல் தொல்லை கொடுத்த வழக்கில், 15 வயது சிறுவன் உட்பட மூன்று வடமாநில தொழிலாளர்கள் கைது, சென்னை மதுரவாயல் பகுதியில் அதிகாலையில் வீட்டிற்கு வெளியே கோலம் போட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்த பெண்ணிடம் பாலியல் சீண்டல் செய்த வழக்கு என, தொடர்ந்து பல குற்றங்களில், வட மாநில இளைஞர��கள் கைது செய்யப்படுவது பல கேள்விகளை எழுப்பியுள்ளது.

குற்றங்களில் ஈடுபடுபவர்களை, காவல்துறை உடனடியாகக் கண்டுபிடித்துக் கைது செய்வது பாராட்டத்தக்கது. ஆனால், குற்றங்கள் நடைபெறாமல் தடுப்பதற்கான என்ன நடவடிக்கைகளை மேற்கொள்ளப் போகிறது தமிழக அரசு?

பணி நிமித்தமாக, பல மாநிலங்களைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் தமிழகத்துக்கு வருவதும், தமிழகத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள், பல இடங்களுக்குச் செல்வதும் இயற்கை. ஆனால், பிற மாநிலங்களிலிருந்து தமிழகத்துக்கு வருபவர்கள் குறித்த சரியான விவரங்கள், அவர்களை பணியிலமர்த்தும் ஒப்பந்ததாரர்களிடமோ அல்லது, நிறுவன உரிமைய��ளர்களிடமோ இருக்கிறதா? இந்த விவரங்கள், தமிழக அரசிடம் வழங்கப்படுகிறதா? இதனை முறைப்படுத்த வேண்டாமா?

தமிழக அரசு உடனடியாக இது குறித்து நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும். தமிழகத்தில் வடமாநிலங்களைச் சேர்ந்த எத்தனை தொழிலாளர்கள், எந்தெந்த நகரங்களில் இருக்கிறார்கள், அவர்கள் சொந்த ஊர் உள்ளிட்ட விவரங்கள், தற்போதைய பணியிடங்கள் மற்றும் தங்குமிடம் என, அனைத்து தகவல்களையும், வடமாநிலத் தொழிலாளர்��ளைப் பணியமர்த்தும் உரிமையாளர்கள், தமிழக அரசுக்கு வழங்க வேண்டும். இதனை தமிழக அரசும் முறையாகக் கண்காணிக்க வேண்டும் என்று வலியுறுத்துகிறேன்.

கடந்த 2023 ஆம் ஆண்டு திமுக ஆட்சியிலும் இதே போல, 4.5% கொழுப்புச் சத்துள்ள பச்சை நிற பாக்கெட் பால் விற்பனையை நிறுத்தி விட்டு, 3.5% கொழுப்பு சத்துள்ள ஊதா நிற பாக்கெட் பால் விற்பனை செய்ய முடிவெடுத்த போது, எதிர்க்கட்சிகள் எ���ிர்ப்பால் அந்த முடிவை திமுக அரசு கைவிட்டது. ஆனால், தற்போதைய தவெக அரசும் அதே முடிவை மக்களிடம் திணிப்பது, வன்மையாகக் கண்டிக்கத்தக்கது.

கிரீன் மேஜிக் வகை பால் விற்பனை குறைப்புக்கு, நிதி இழப்பைக் காரணமாகக் கூறுகிறார்கள். நிதி இழப்பைச் சரி செய்ய, பால் உற்பத்தியையும், பால் மற்றும் பால் பொருள்கள் விற்பனையையும் அதிகரித்து, அதன் மூலம் நிதி இழப்பைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தும் நடவடிக்கைகளில் ஈடுபட வேண்டுமே தவிர, ஏழை எளிய மக்கள் அதிகம் பயன்படுத்தும் பால் வகை விற்பனையை நிறுத்தக் கூடாது.

Bhai Mati Das stepped forward and replied, “I am Mati Das. If my Guru permits, I can sit here and tell you everything happening from Delhi to Lahore. I can shake your fortress to its very foundation.”

Aurangzeb growled in anger and, to force him into religious conversion, threatened him with brutal torture. Boiling cauldrons of hot oil were brought before him to create fear in his mind. But men of faith do not fear death. For them, sacrificing life for Dharma is greater than life itself.

When all of Aurangzeb’s threats failed and every attempt proved useless, he became furious. He summoned the Qazi and asked, “Tell me, what punishment should be given to him?”

The Qazi pronounced:

“Since this infidel refuses to accept Islam, he should be sawn apart like a piece of wood.”

Aurangzeb immediately ordered his soldiers to carry out the sentence.

At Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, Bhai Mati Das was tightly bound between two wooden posts, and the soldiers began sawing him alive from the head downward.

Yet not a single cry escaped his lips.

Aurangzeb once again said,

“There is still time. Accept Islam, and you will be spared. You will be rewarded with wealth and riches.”

The fearless Mati Das replied,

“As long as I live, I will never abandon my faith.”

Such was the courage of Dharma Veer Bhai Mati Das.

The place where he was martyred is remembered today as Bhai Mati Das Chowk.
