Watch Marco Rubio nod through positions he once condemned. Watch Lindsey Graham applaud the man he once described as unfit. Watch Ted Cruz grin beside the president who publicly humiliated his wife. You are not watching loyalty. You are watching submission.

The embarrassing part is not that they changed their minds. People do that. It is watching grown men perform admiration they plainly do not feel.

Every smile looks rehearsed, every compliment sounds rented, and every appearance carries the faint smell of self-preservation.

Europeans find this almost impossible to understand, and the reason is simple. In much of American political and corporate life, disagreeing with the boss is treated as disloyalty. In most of Europe, disagreeing with the boss is treated as doing your job. We never abolished hierarchy. We abolished the idea that adults should pretend the boss is always right.

Ask any American executive who takes a top job in a European company. They arrive expecting people to nod. Instead the first Dutch engineer tells them the plan will not work, the German finance director says the numbers do not add up, and someone from Denmark asks why anyone approved it in the first place. Nobody there is being rude. They are being useful.

Which is what the men around Trump have forgotten. Everyone knows the performance is fake. The audience knows, the voters know, and most painfully of all, the man doing the flattering knows. Nobody remembers the courtier. History remembers the people who said no.

Today, I signed a bill to cut housing costs by up to $60,000 per home, expand homeownership, and build more affordable housing.
