“Huge concern” as @ONS figures indicate declining UK R&D spend, while @NCUBtweets analysis shows public investment in research generates private spending at more than double the level previously thought. @TWilliamsTHE reports
https://t.co/FCa5TMsKtM
New data released by the ONS has revealed, indicatively, that the total spend on R&D across the UK reduced from 2.81% of GDP in 2021 to 2.77% of GDP in 2022.
This comes as new NCUB analysis reveals that for every £1 spent by the Government on R&D, an additional £3.09 to £4.02 is then spent by businesses investing in UK R&D. This is nearly twice as high as previously thought.

A recent academic article covered in @TheEconomist claims universities aren't driving economic growth. We debated this with @RichardALJones, @Gilesyb, @rosalind_lowe and others. Here's @NCUBtweets blog where we argue for a more nuanced perspective https://t.co/lJQtqWM9MT
@RichardALJones@Gilesyb@stianwestlake@jeegarkakkad@GeorgeDibb @AndyWWestwood It's interesting indeed! I note an important measurement error: paper gauges public science by subfield publication numbers. Yet, not all publications are equal; some are more important, overlooking quality differences. Marginal increases matter in science
@RichardALJones@Gilesyb@stianwestlake@jeegarkakkad@GeorgeDibb @AndyWWestwood Not entirely convinced by their attempt to address endogeneity. IVs based on political composition of appropriations subcommittees may lack exogenous variation. Other factors, like government funding for R&D, could impact both subcommittee composition and corporate R&D.
NCUB is hiring! We have three exciting roles, all closing on 12 February.
