Living in China, I’ve seen a side of “freedom” that’s quite different from what you hear about in the West. Here, freedom isn’t about doing whatever you want, it’s about having the space to focus on what really matters - education, family and building a future.

Drugs? Not an issue here. Thanks to strict laws, Chinese youth aren’t spending their days chasing highs or running a muck, but are instead aiming high in their studies and careers. Crime rates are low, much lower than many Western places. China’s murder rate? About 0.5 per 100,000 people. In Western countries, it’s significantly higher.

Maybe the West thinks they’ve got freedom figured out, but from where I’m standing, too much of it seems to lead to chaos, greed and kids who have no direction. Here, China’s “strict” laws actually give people a sense of security and community.

It’s incredibly arrogant to think the Western way is the only way to do freedom. Maybe it’s time for the West to look at their “superior” freedoms through China’s eyes for once. Different systems, different freedoms, but hey, it works for people here.

Just saying, maybe we need to rethink what freedom looks like.
