On 7 December 1984, just four days after the Bhopal Gas Tragedy killed thousands, Warren Anderson, the main accused, was arrested in Bhopal and then released within hours.

He was put on a Madhya Pradesh government plane and allowed to leave India, never to return. This happened under the Rajiv Gandhi government.

Six months later, when Rajiv visited the White House, Reagan granted presidential clemency to Adil Shahryar (Rajiv’s childhood friend serving 35 years in a U.S. prison) on the very day of the visit.

So when the American President holds an umbrella for the Indian PM, some call it “aura.” Others see the polite diplomatic gesture that followed the earlier favour of letting the Bhopal culprit walk free.

History has receipts. The victims of Bhopal are still waiting for justice.
