The gospel matters because it means the restoration of creation by means of the redemption of humanity. This world’s groans are not in vain. (Been meditating on Wright’s thoughts on Romans 8)

When we push Jesus out of the sermon, people end up saying with Mary Magdalene: They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.
Imagine the progress we would have experienced as a society if those concerned about the hypothetical harms of the privileged were equally concerned about the actual harms experienced of the disadvantaged.

Slavery in the USA: race based.
Anti-literacy laws: race-based.
Segregation: race-based.
Redlining/School funding: race-based
standardized tests bias: race-based
School discipline bias: race-based.
But solutions to correct the inequalities can’t be race based? #affirmativeaction
Another biblically informed deconstruction we need to embrace: there are NOT 2 tiers in Christianity known as clergy and laity. All Christians are clergy (priests) and all Christians are laity (everyday people).
Happy “that’s not what he meant” Day!
Here’s a primer on spotting misuses of MLK’s life & legacy today.
You know they’re misusing MLK when they
1. Promote peace and unity at the expense of justice.
Dr. King pointed out that any peace not founded on justice is a false peace
If you consider a wife’s role in marriage to be one of complete obedience and subordination, you are reading Aristotle, not Paul. That’s pagan philosophy, not kingdom.
Jesus was not American. Some people would benefit from remembering this.
Jesus loves all Americans, as He loves all people, but he is not invested in nation building. Jesus is interested in establishing God’s Kingdom.
When I hear talk of Christian nationalism, I think of Frederick Douglass’s words, “For between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference.” Is the Christianity of this land all that different today?
A crucified Christ tells you everything you need to know about how Jesus wielded his power and privilege in this world.
A resurrected Christ tells you everything you need to know about how your self-giving and self-sacrificing life will never be in vain.
Who said it?
"We …boggle at how some Christians and conservatives still defend Donald Trump. ...in our efforts to engage our country politically, we have become more Machiavellian and less Pauline. ...we’re willing to do almost anything to ...gain seats on the Supreme Court."
Christian Nationalism isn’t about the Gospel, it’s about conservative cultural power.
Given the racist history of a large part of the American Church, Christian Nationalism would never even be desirable for many Christians. Civic pluralism is a much better way.
My biggest problem with Catholic veneration of Mary is it seems to overshadow that everyone in whom the Spirit dwells is a “God-bearer”. While we should honor Mary as unique in some ways, to see her as *altogether* more special is to overlook the Spirt-indwelled believer.
The Church is not a religious community of worshippers of Christ but is *Christ himself* who has taken form among people.
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer
(This is such a staggering truth that should produce awe, humility and love among Christ-followers)
