I'm finally reading Dune. This quote, which is in the first few pages, hits hard:
"Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."
@ZackScottSports "The Mets are stupid with their money therefore it's not really an advantage that a team like the Mets can spend 3x what the Pirate, Reds or Royals can spend."
@TJStats@DaysSinceSB And the Penguins could still have been able to pay it. The Pirates can't pay market rate for Paul Skenes when he hits free agency.
@MarkCHealey Possibly, but the current system allows your owner to buy any player he wants, which is something the Pirates owner can't do because he's not Steve fucking Cohen.
@jbaraldi11@CorlekCarmas@steakgenderive For every player that would have to take $20 million instead of $25 there would be 5 guys getting a raise because 1/3 of the league has to significantly raise their payroll because of the salary floor.
@Slow_Silentio@sc_cooper7@PghSki17 And this is funny because the players cry every year about it and then when it's time for labor negotiations they get amnesia because guys like Harper go "salary cap bad" when they'll never get Harper type money.
@sc_cooper7@Slow_Silentio@PghSki17 Most of the 94% think they are in that 6% and then act shocked when they don't get the deal they wanted and finally sign for less in late January.
@JesseRogersESPN Yeah, if every small market has the same perfect weather and zero competition from any other major sports team in a very affluent city, then they can be just like San Diego.
@NancyMace Cool, then because everyone else pays for the infrastructure and schools that made their homes appreciate in value they don't get to keep those gains.
