Gianni Infantino, 2025: "It’s important to clarify this. There is a lot of misconception out there. Everyone will be welcome in Canada, Mexico and the United States for the FIFA World Cup next year."
FIFA today: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 👉 🇺🇸

So far at the 2026 FIFA Epstein Cup before a ball kicked:
- Senegal & Uzbekistan squads treated like criminals upon arrival given full cavity searches;
- Africa’s best referee sent back to Somalia despite having a diplomatic passport;
- Iraq team photographer sent back despite valid visa;
- AIPS (international sport journalist association) calling on FIFA to sort out unacceptable visa issues of African & Iranian journalists;
- 90% of Moroccan fans with tickets denied entry
- 14 members of Iran backroom staff denied visas
Not a word from Gianni ”today I feel black/gay/disabled etc” Infantino.
As South Africa, we hosted the World Cup in 2010.
Upon the insistence of FIFA & in accordance with the Host Country & Host City Agreements, we had to waiver laws, by-laws, policies, regulations, processes & the like, to ensure that South Africa became the ultimate hosts of the world during the period.
We passed special legislation specifically to meet FIFA's hosting requirements for the 2010 World Cup. The most important were the '2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Special Measures Act, 2006 (Act 11 of 2006)' and the 'Second 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Special Measures Act, 2006 (Act 12 of 2006)'. These laws were enacted to give legal effect to the guarantees we had made to FIFA during the bidding process.
The special laws effected temporary special provisions & exceptions in certain areas, including: Special visa, work permit, & accreditation arrangements for players, officials, media & visitors.
These requirements were not exclusive to South Africa, as Korea & Japan (2002), Germany (2006), Brazil (2014), Russia (2018), Qatar (2022), had to enact the same.
🧵One more thread on EU trade with Israel's illegal settlements.
Lot of people ask - would an EU ban on such trade require unanimity or qualified majority (QMV) of EU states?
Together with @CIDSE@DorienVdb50 we asked this question to experts on EU constitutional law.
A weapon of mass distraction… the point is Italy’s opposition both to the suspension of the association agreement and to a commission proposal to ban settlement trade. Sanctioning Ben Gvir (which requires unanimity and likely won’t happen anyway) is a red herring
"A compromise must be found between Sweida and the government in Damascus. ... Until or unless that happens, Sweida will continue to fall behind Syria’s wider recovery and path of stabilization," writes @Charles_Lister in @newlinesmag.

This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day. We should be able to find common ground in opposing rape. Here's a gift link to the article: https://t.co/aMMHId49OO
España no mira hacia otro lado.
Trump is chiefly responsible for the Iran war. But his inner circle includes many people who are staunch defenders of Israel and longtime beneficiaries of Israel-related campaign contributions, writes columnist @stephenwalt. https://t.co/WwluEZbxT0
“President Trump went to war against Iran without explaining his strategy to the American people or the world. It now appears that he may not have had much of a strategy at all,” writes the editorial board.

My latest piece in @FT about how Iran's Hormuz blockade and Chinese rare earths controls show that the US has lost the dominance it once enjoyed in economic coercion, and what this means for sanctions as tools between war and peace:
