๐ฅ๐ฑ GROUNDNUT FARMING IN KENYA: THE UNDERRATED MONEY MAKER ๐ฑ๐ฅ
Groundnut farming, popularly known as njugu karanga farming, is one of the most profitable yet underrated agribusiness ventures in Kenya. Despite requiring relatively low inputs compared to many other crops, groundnuts offer excellent returns, improve soil fertility, and fit perfectly into smallholder farming systems.
Groundnuts thrive well in Kenya's arid and semi-arid regions and are mainly grown in Western Kenya, Nyanza, Eastern Kenya, and parts of the Rift Valley. The crop performs best in warm temperatures of 28ยฐC to 30ยฐC, with well-drained sandy or sandy-loam soils having a pH of 5.5 to 7.0. Groundnuts require between 500 and 600 mm of well-distributed rainfall for optimum yields.
Several varieties are grown in Kenya, including Red Valencia, Manipinta, Red Oriata, Homa Bay, Bukene, Texas Peanut, Makulu Red, and Atika. Early maturing varieties are ready for harvest in as little as 85โ95 days, while medium and late varieties mature in 95โ120 days or more.
One of the biggest advantages of groundnut farming is profitability. Under proper management, farmers can harvest up to 1.6 tonnes per acre, with groundnuts retailing at attractive prices in local markets. The crop enjoys strong demand for fresh consumption, peanut butter processing, cooking oil production, confectionery, and livestock feed. Groundnuts are also rich in protein, healthy oils, vitamins, and antioxidants, making them highly nutritious and marketable.
For maximum yields, farmers should:
โ Prepare a fine seedbed before planting.
โ Plant certified seed varieties.
โ Practice crop rotation, especially with cereals such as maize.
โ Apply phosphorus fertilizers and organic manure where necessary.
โ Maintain proper spacing depending on the variety grown.
โ Control weeds, pests, and diseases early.
โ Ensure adequate moisture during flowering and pod development stages.
Besides generating income, groundnuts naturally fix nitrogen in the soil, improving soil fertility and reducing fertilizer costs for subsequent crops. Maize planted after groundnuts can record significant yield increases due to residual soil nitrogen.
Although challenges such as unreliable rainfall, pests, diseases, and limited access to improved seed still exist, groundnut farming remains one of Kenya's most promising enterprises for farmers seeking quick returns and sustainable profits.
