Sergio Pérez says his 2024 decline at Red Bull was due to team circumstances
"If you look purely at my last six months at Red Bull, you probably wouldn't think I'm one of the best drivers. But if you understand the circumstances I was in back then, and if you understand how performance comes together, then you see a different picture.
When you look at the performances I'm showing now at Cadillac, you realize that I do indeed belong among the best. Ultimately, you need the right circumstances to fully exploit your talent. In that respect, I am very happy that I have returned and been able to prove that to myself once again. Ultimately, for a driver, it is primarily a battle with yourself. You want to have that confidence in your own ability.
When I came back, I noticed straight away that it did me good. Because when you struggle as much as I did during my final period at Red Bull, your confidence takes a major hit. When I subsequently got into the car and was already up to speed after ten laps, without having driven anything else beforehand, I immediately thought: it must have been the circumstances.
And when I look at the last three or four races, at the performance level I can show in qualifying, the races, and in terms of race pace, it gives me the feeling that that speed was always there.
As a driver, there are many factors you have no control over. When you are wrestling with so many different problems at the same time, it becomes very difficult to show your true level. That's why this is a massive boost for my confidence. And I also think it's a good example for many drivers who go through a period like that. Because at a certain point, you start thinking: 'Maybe I'm the problem myself, maybe I'm not as good as I used to be.'
But often, in the end, it is down to the circumstances around you."
