@ben_golub IIRC Gilbert Ryle in "'If', 'So', and 'Because'" argues that the typical way of forming conditionals in English is subjunctive, and that the antecedent/consequent thereby aren't statements at all. (Cf. 'were X false'.) Part of a larger argument for cond'ls as inference tickets
This really solidifies my hunch that some people are strong consequentialists on this and some are strong deontologists and they both find each other baffling
