@Booksfuelall@thomaschattwill I have experienced public healthcare in two European countries and the US. As a person without much money, Europe's system is infinitely preferable.
@HistoryBoomer I sometimes wonder how dedicated an environmentalist I am. Like, would I die to save a blue whale? Maybe if it were sure to save the species. What about an exotic cricket? What about a million of them and they will surely die off if I don't? Probably not.
@thomaschattwill I found myself much more repelled from activists here who are calling for radical change when I'm like, "Actually, I think this system is pretty great. That's why I left the States."
@devahaz 20% is too much. The US has gone off the deep end. The restaurant industry is spiraling and nobody's going to save it because it's too fucking expensive to eat out anymore.
@mattyglesias Insofar as it would have had a similar effect on emissions sans bloodshed and unilateral destabilization of a sovereign state, yes, it would have been better policy.
@Aella_Girl Tipping culture is completely out of control in the US but it will never be fixed. It forms a major part of too many people's incomes, so any top-down initiative to do a reset will be shot down.
@mattyglesias Please do at least a short run podcast with @jessesingal where the two of you dork out about late millennium-era punk and ska. @Noahpinion may also contribute.
@stitchnstab@thomaschattwill This is bullshit. I've literally never met a European who doesn't have a passport, who hasn't been to at least three other countries.
@thomaschattwill It's impossible not to notice once you've been outside the US for an extended period. Americans proportionally dress and look worse. There also seems to be more mental illness on display.
