Kid in the apartment above me has been lowering toys down past my window on a string.
Started two weeks ago. Action figure appeared outside my third-floor window, dangling on fishing line. Stayed there for ten minutes, then got pulled back up.
Next day, a plastic dinosaur. Day after, a small race car.
Didn't think much of it until the toys started holding signs.
Tiny cardboard signs tied to them with thread. Messages written in crayon.
First sign: "DO YOU LIKE DINOSAURS?"
Opened my window. Yelled up.
Me: Yes, I like dinosaurs.
Heard scrambling above. The dinosaur dropped lower, bouncing against my window. New sign appeared.
"WHATS YOUR FAVORITE?"
Me: Triceratops.
Dinosaur got pulled up. Five minutes later, a triceratops came down.
This continued daily. Different questions. Different toys.
"DO YOU HAVE A DOG?" No.
"DO YOU LIKE PIZZA?" Yes.
"CAN YOU SEE THE PARK FROM YOUR WINDOW?" No, wrong side.
My girlfriend thought it was creepy.
Her: A child is surveilling you.
Me: A child is making friends the only way they know how.
Her: Through interrogation?
Me: Through toys on strings.
Week two, questions got more specific.
"ARE YOU THE ONE WHO PLAYS GUITAR?"
Me: (surprised) Yes.
"YOU'RE REALLY GOOD."
Me: Thank you.
"CAN YOU PLAY WONDERWALL?"
Me: Absolutely not.
"WHY NOT?"
Me: It's forbidden.
"BY WHO?"
Me: The universe.
Heard laughing from above.
Next day, a drawing came down instead of a toy. Stick figure playing guitar. Another stick figure listening through the floor.
Speech bubble: "Thanks for the music. My mom says it helps her fall asleep."
Felt something shift in my chest.
Me: (yelling up) Does your mom work nights?
String bobbed. New note came down.
"Yes. She's a nurse. Gets home at 7am."
That explained the weird schedule. Kid was alone at night, mom slept during the day.
Me: What's your name?
"Leo. I'm 6. What's yours?"
Me: Chris. I'm 29.
"That's old."
Me: Thanks.
"Do you have kids?"
Me: No.
"Do you want some? You can have me."
Laughed out loud. Heard giggling above.
Started playing guitar specifically at 8pm now. Right before Leo's bedtime probably.
Softer stuff. Classical pieces. Nothing too loud.
Yesterday a note came down: "Mom wants to know if you like cookies."
Me: Yes.
Hour later, knocking on my door. Woman in scrubs holding a plate of cookies, kid hiding behind her legs.
Her: I'm Sarah from upstairs. This is Leo.
Leo: (peeking out) You're taller in person.
Me: You're shorter.
Leo: That's rude.
Sarah: I wanted to thank you. The guitar helps me sleep after shifts. And Leo loves your window conversations.
Me: He's good company.
Leo: Can I see your guitar?
Me: (looked at Sarah)
Sarah: If you don't mind?
Showed him the guitar. Let him strum it once. Sounded terrible. He loved it.
They left after twenty minutes. Leo waved goodbye like we were old friends.
This morning, new toy came down.
Superhero holding a sign: "YOU'RE COOL."
Sent my own note up on the string.
"You too, Leo."
String went slack. Note stayed down there.
Kept it.
Sometimes the best friendships start with a dinosaur on a fishing line.

@colinmcfarlane I did! I was a little surprised by the ending. There's a Cold Spring stop north of where I live in NY.
