@peiferlabunc @HHMINEWS Interesting that you would consider regionality as part of DEI policies, particularly as I wouldn't consider UNC for example as a marginalized institution.
That being said, I wholeheartedly agree with you that the HHMI has pioneered DEI work, especially as a private organization!
@peiferlabunc Needs to? They're a privately endowed research organization with their own priorities. If regionality isn't one of them, as evidenced for years if not decades of awards, what is your argument for their need to change? Should the Nobel prize be awarded to more (insert x) country?
@peiferlabunc Those are your words, Mark - biases are guaranteed and to be expected. As with all highly sought after awards, there is undoubtedly a long list of disappointed and deserving candidates
@peiferlabunc Gerrymandering the HHMI doesn’t seem possible, nor would I imagine it improving research outcomes.
On the other hand, this cohort is quite diverse in their use of plants and non model systems, which are truly understudied and have the potential for outsized impact.

1/ Solutions to the climate crisis are already here. But they're stuck in academic labs.
Often, after the basic science is done, there’s just a little more work needed to show the science has commercial potential. But no one funds this!

It's that time again- time to register for the Physiology summer course at Woods Hole's @MBLScience. I was an instructor last year (and will be again this year), and I can honestly say it was one of the best scientific experiences of my life.
Are you an undergraduate interested in biophysical research? Come spend the summer with us @ucmerced@CCBM_UCMerced studying how organisms use disordered proteins to protect from dehydration. *All* expenses paid 🛫🍽️🛌+ 3.5k stipend! DM for details or at https://t.co/eGxgerjy1t
At @ArcInstitute, we're launching the Arc Science Fellows program for early-career scientists to start their own lab right after grad school with $250K/year research budget + salary.
