🟣I take nothing away from the SADC Summit that’s being hosted later this year in Zimbabwe. It is important. However, there’s something about the posture of Govt in respect of this meeting that has made me wonder about our place in the world and calls for a courageous conversation.

Zimbabwe used to host international summits as big as the Commonwealth Heads of Govt Meeting and sporting fixtures as big as the All Africa Games. African leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Sam Nujoma came routinely and the best of Zimbabwean excellence was continuously on display. It was not a temporary show. We hosted the Pope. We hosted Royals. We hosted the king of pop. The state of the nation was such that we did not need an entire new road network or brand new accommodation to put on a show for visiting guests.

Fast forward to today, putting the capital into a state where we can barely host a regional conference is taking over half a year. We cannot play any international soccer matches in Zimbabwe due to dilapidated infrastructure. The Govt has had to hurriedly patch up the roads to avoid embarrassment despite the fact that these are the dilapidated, crater-filled roads citizens use daily and the Govt has never seen it fit to conduct an overhaul.

Compare us with Nairobi, Kigali or Addis. These cities host multilateral summits all the time. Their readiness is not news because the Govts are self respecting and open enough to know that nation must be kept in a decent state of repair at any given time - not just for visiting guests but as a mark of national pride.

What happened to the Zimbabwe that was once house proud and a shining example of excellence in many spheres on the continent? What happened to our ability to maintain modern infrastructure? What happened to our commitment to high standards? There’s a time when there were no potholes or power cuts in Mbare. Residents had access to clean tap water. Now things are so bad that even the so-called prime areas like Chisipite and Borrowdale have potholed roads everywhere, daily loadshedding and makeshift garbage dumps that are a health hazard. Everything is falling apart yet those who are meant to lead refuse to take responsibility for the broken state of the nation.

It’s a mess.

Zimbabwe can and must do better. This mediocrity is nauseating. What Kwame Nkrumah once described as a Jewel has been reduced to junk.

How did we allow ourselves to become the sick man of the Continent and a laughing stock to the world? Why have we normalized low standards, rubbish and brokenness?

We need new leaders.🇿🇼

I was shocked to hear that a Zimbabwean Government has jailed Jacob Ngarivhume @NgarivhumeJacob, for demanding accountability through picket lines on how Covid-19 funds were used in 2020 by kleptocratic politicians.

Sending an activist to 4 years imprisonment for simply holding different political views is pathetic.

Zimbabweans must learn to protect their own, particularly those who are the voice of the voiceless against the corrupt few. The truth will never be incarcerated; Africa we are one.

This is the wife of Zimbabwe’s political prisoner and opposition Member of Parliament @JobSikhala1 who has been in prison for over 320 days without conviction.

He was denied bail, something which he is entitled to constitutionally.

Ellen Sikhala has become the mother and father of their children whilst Job Sikhala is unfairly locked up!

Sikhala who is a lawyer has been been arrested 67 times without a single conviction in the last 23 years!
