Corporate Europe Observatory joins the x-odus.
Twitter started as a platform of public debate. Under Musk, however, X has become a space of fascism, hatred and division. This goes strongly against our values as an organisation and we cannot be complicit.

🔊We are many voices calling on EU leaders to tackle this problem at the root:
❌Stop fueling corporate greed #ForeverLobbying
✅#BanPFAS is the solution to this public health crisis

The @EU_Commission should now:
1⃣ Increase transparency on AI standard-setting
2⃣ Increase participation of civil society
❌More fundamentally, the EU should not outsource public policy-making on fundamental rights to private bodies!
Our previous research already showed Big Tech was able to substantially water down the AI Act.
🤖 Now tech firms are drafting the rules on how to implement the AI Act.

📄 EU standards on AI do not start from a blank page.
Big Tech experts in CEN-CENELEC are pushing hard to get international standards adopted – which are even more industry-friendly.
Microsoft is especially dominant in setting AI standards.
3⃣ national delegations to CEN-CENELEC - Germany, the UK, and Ireland - are regularly headed by Microsoft representatives.
Microsoft also co-hosted a plenary session of CEN-CENELEC in 2024.
Civil society organisations and academics are challenging Big Tech’s dominance in AI standard-setting.
But they are struggling in the face of corporate interests with endless resources.
Standard-setting organisations are private bodies historically dominated by corporate interests
55% of experts working on AI standards in CEN-CENELEC are from companies or consultancies w/ a large share from Big Tech. Only 9% are from civil society
👉 https://t.co/WjfpRA4ZAr
🪀Up to now, standards have been used for technical issues such as machine safety or chemicals in toys
🤖 Worryingly, the AI Act is the first time 'harmonised standards' will be used to implement rules on fundamental rights, how to deal with bias in AI systems, and transparency
🚨New report
📝Behind closed doors, Big Tech is writing the standards that will govern their own AI systems
❌The EU should not outsource public policy-making on fundamental rights to private bodies

Health workers in Palestine (Gaza) detained by Israel. Israeli army does not provide details
@PHRIsrael@P4HR@amnesty are concerned as are we @EPSUnions
Not acceptable that health and care workers are targeted. This could be war crimes @unhrcpr@HumanRightsWa17@hrw and otgers
🥤💧 Without realising it, we are crossing a new planetary boundary. A small human-made molecule is increasingly polluting our drinking water on a global scale, #TFA. And #PFAS#Pesticides are the main reason.

Usual story re DG Grow
"Grow is rather sensitive to MNCs arguments even if it means repeating their arguments almost word for word. In internal memo it expresses its concerns about nomination of siloxanes ... then lists its reservations which are very similar to industry letters"
