🇨🇺 Que nunca se nos olvide Cuba

En esta hora difícil para las soberanías de América Latina, el criminal cerco a la isla de Cuba nos duele especialmente a los mexicanos y las mexicanas y nos obliga a alzar la voz.

Ante el bloqueo de combustibles a Cuba que impuso Trump, así como la amenaza de ocupación militar, lo decimos con claridad: son medidas ilegales, inhumanas e injustificadas que castigan directamente al pueblo cubano.

Durante siglos nuestros países han sido vecinos y hermanos. Incluso la población afrodescendiente en México provino de Cuba. Hemos compartido su música y la nuestra. Su mambo, su danzón, su son, su trova y sus boleros cruzaron el Golfo de México de ida y vuelta.

Sus poetas y escritores se cuentan entre los grandes creadores de nuestra lengua común. Nos hemos apoyado mutuamente en huracanes y epidemias. Sus médicos han caminado nuestras veredas y sanado nuestros padecimientos.

Por eso, hacemos un firme llamado a la solidaridad con el pueblo cubano y a poner fin al unilateralismo soberbio y agresivo. Respaldamos y convocamos a apoyar todas las acciones, gubernamentales y ciudadanas, que defiendan el bienestar, la integridad y la dignidad humanas en Cuba.

The word "communist" did enormous work during the Cold War.

It attached to Mosaddegh, who was a liberal nationalist.

It attached to Árbenz, who was a democratic reformer.

It attached to Allende, who won a democratic election.

It attached to Lumumba, who wanted the Congo's minerals for Congolese people.

It attached to Sankara, who planted trees and vaccinated children.

It attached to the ANC in South Africa.

It attached to the PLO.

It attached to striking labor unions.

It attached to land reform movements.

It attached to anyone who questioned whether foreign corporations should control a country's natural resources.

The word did not describe an ideology in these cases.

The word was a termination signal.

Once attached, it authorized removal.

It deactivated the normal rules.

It suspended the democracy promotion, the human rights concern, the multilateral consultation.

It bypassed every stated principle and went directly to the operational response.

Once you were "communist," you were outside the framework of people whose political rights the West was defending.

The label was applied to whoever needed to be outside that framework.

It was the most powerful administrative tool of the twentieth century.

It required no evidence.

It required only attachment.

And the people who attached it are still considered statesmen.

We are told that security in the Middle East requires defeating Iran, security in East Asia requires defeating China, and security in Europe requires defeating Russia. We never discuss security in terms of how to learn to live together by harmonising interests and managing competition. This is by design. This is hegemonic peace, in which security depends on defeating rivals rather than managing a balance of power.

Subsequently, security relies solely on deterrence rather than reassurance; diplomacy is dismissed as appeasement; peace agreements are temporary and deceptive; and war is peace. Our rivals do not have legitimate security concerns, as their policies are allegedly always motivated by aggressive, irrational, or expansionist behaviour.

We have convinced ourselves that our liberal hegemony is a force for good, and that our opponents oppose our dominance because they reject our benign values of freedom. Discussing the security concerns of adversaries is believed to “legitimise” their policies, which is treasonous. The world is divided into good guys (liberal democracies) and bad guys (autocracies). We should not ask how defeating Russia, as the world's largest nuclear power, is a rational security strategy, or why our governments refuse to even speak with Moscow to discuss the European security architecture and end the war. Our governments have relabelled nuclear deterrence as nuclear blackmail to signal that there can be no more constraints.

All empires can become irrational during decline. Leaders take greater risks to avoid decline, legitimacy crises at home must be distracted with enemies abroad, outdated strategies from a bygone era of strength are still embraced, and there is a tendency to double down on narratives of being indispensable, representing universal values, and dismissing all opposition as illegitimate and dangerous. Are we the fanatics?

The American education system never taught empire.

Not really. Not honestly.

It taught discovery instead of conquest.

It taught manifest destiny as geography instead of genocide.

It taught the Cold War as a defensive struggle against totalitarianism, not as a fifty-year campaign to prevent any country from choosing an alternative economic model.

It taught Vietnam as a tragedy of good intentions, not a deliberate experiment in using maximum force to terrorize the Third World into compliance.

Every atrocity was framed as an aberration.

Mỹ Lai was a few bad soldiers.

The CIA coups were regrettable excesses of a complicated era.

The embargo on Cuba is an outdated policy that just hasn't been updated yet.

The Iraq war was a mistake based on bad intelligence.

Not a war crime.

Not a pattern.

Not the predictable output of a system that has always prioritized power over human life when those two things come into conflict.

Aberration. Mistake. Tragedy. Exception.

Never: this is who we are.

This is what the system does.

This is not a bug.

And so each generation of Americans arrives at adulthood believing they are the inheritors of something noble that occasionally fell short, rather than the beneficiaries of something imperial that occasionally felt bad about itself.

The distinction matters enormously.

Inheritors of noble failure can be disappointed without being destabilized.

Beneficiaries of empire cannot hear the truth without feeling the floor tilt.

So they were never told the truth.

And the ones who try to tell it now are called foreign agents, are called divisive, are called anti-American.

Because in a country built on a lie about itself, truth is always a political act.

Today my banking institution of 26 years, Citizens Bank, declared that they were ending their banking relationship with me. My accounts were zeroed out without explanation. While I may eventually see this money returned to me, the question of why this occurred remains unanswered, raising a whole host of issues related to civil liberties.
