I have thousands of hours flying helicopters and many in mountainous terrain along with unpredictable weather that closes in on you so fast, you’re like.. what just happened?! It’s mental gymnastics, you want to complete mission and get from point A to B because that’s in a pilot’s nature to do so.

In a situation like today, you may have someone that is extremely wealthy or a political figure sitting behind you and you do not want to tell them “no” because they are surrounded by “yes men” on the ground. You might start thinking that you’re easily replaceable and so you get into a situation like this because pressure starts mounting in the back of your head. “What happens if I get fired by not completing this flight?, how am I gonna feed my family?, it goes on and on and while being a pilot may sound glamorous, it comes with a ton of responsibility. You try to learn from others and develop tactics like IFR “I Follow Roads” literally like I captured in this video. There are so many variables involved that it becomes mind numbing.

I understand the political views around this accident but I do not envy those pilots and what they must have been experiencing. As far as flying a Bell 212 which is not the latest and greatest in terms of helicopter tech, in a situation like this you need to rely on your eyeballs and positive control of your aircraft unless you commit and go IFR (flying on instruments) but that comes with it’s own set of challenges ie. can you maintain your own terrain separation, can you get a hold of ATC, do you have the fuel to find the nearest instrument approach and be able to break out of the clouds?

It’s possible these pilots were able to maintain visual contact with the ground but were surrounded by rising terrain and no place to land. They tried their best but they were in the mountains and the clouds overcame them and they lost sight of the terrain. We’ll probably never know the real reason for this accident. I can tell you so many more stories.

PS. If you’re wondering why we turned right in this video, we decided we couldn’t fly the entire pass and landed successfully in a ski resort parking lot. Also, I suck at writing stories and I apologize in advance for any grammatical errors.
