India 🇮🇳 just moved to ban real-money online gaming (fantasy, rummy, poker, etc). The bill has cleared both houses and is now waiting for the President’s sign-off.

My take:

A ban might protect some users, but it could also push people towards unregulated offshore apps. Esports and non-money gaming will probably see a boost, but India’s strong RMG product talent and jobs are on the line. We’ve seen this before with crypto 🪙 and taxis 🚕

Bans don’t kill demand. Good rules work better than black markets.

A better path would be strict KYC and age checks, deposit limits, cooling-off periods, a clear separation between fantasy (skill) and betting (chance) with proper audits, a central registry and licensing with data transparency and faster dispute redressal, payments only through compliant rails with heavy penalties for violators, and smarter marketing rules with real addiction support.

India can be both pro-consumer and pro-innovation. Regulate with care, don’t wipe out the whole category.
