Cristiano Ronaldo @Cristiano is a symbol of an icon that I will always point to when teaching in class. I have seen determined people, but I have never seen a resilient person like this man.

Born into a very poor family, yet he did not let poverty stop him. Ronaldo walked miles to go to school, played barefoot, and did not have an ordinary meal to eat, but he did not give up. At times, a kind woman helped him with food at a restaurant where she worked. From that boy in Madeira with nothing to his name, he built himself into a name the whole world now knows.

I will tell my students to be like this icon who did not only rely on his talent, but matched it with hard work. He is not carried away by the youthful exuberance of his time and beyond. While others got tattoos, Ronaldo shunned them. He remembered that he needed to be able to donate blood to the dying, knowing that with tattoos he couldn't do that. That is a man who thought of saving another life before he thought of his own image.

Ronaldo is not just a player. He is one with a difference. A Champion and conqueror of Europe. He went to England and reigned at Manchester United, winning the Premier League and lifting the UEFA Champions League with them. He went to Spain and took Real Madrid C.F. to glory, winning Champions League titles back to back, something no club had done in the modern era before him. And the journey did not stop there. He went to Italy, and Juventus fans sang his name from the stands even as an ageing star still outscoring men half his mileage. He did not sit in one place to be crowned the greatest of all time like others. At 40, he kept fit, eating healthy, drinking healthy, and shunning all forms of alcohol. A man who has everything to be proud of but wears humility like a cloth.

When his contemporaries desperately wanted to become FIFA's boy just to be favoured and rigged into the top, Ronaldo remained cool, believing that his hard work, and not unnecessary and undue favouritism, would lead him through.

He belittled age, went to Saudi Arabia at 40, and still kept lifting silverware with نادي النصر السعودي - AlNassr Saudi Club, refusing to fade quietly the way many expected. Before him, Portugal knew no major trophy, until he led them to lift the Euro in 2016, the first international title in their history. He motivated millions of children across the world, and his legacy will live forever.

Cristiano is not envious, even when surrounded by such people.

In class, as a school teacher, whenever I talk to my students, I will always tell them to be like Cristiano Ronaldo.

There’s a reason no one cares if Messi wins five World Cups. His career will always be associated with controversy, robbery, and heavy support from FIFA.

Even if he wins the World Cup again, it doesn’t change the fact that, many of his trophies came amid controversial decisions and too much help from FIFA.

In my opinion, he’s not the greatest footballer of all time. Ronaldo always has been, and always will be.
