It was late 2009. My then girlfriend and I had gone to Pondy for the weekend. On the way back, we stopped at Tanto’s for pizza.

The pizza comes, and it looks and smells yummy. I’m about to start eating when she turns around and asks the person for some ketchup.

I wince. I hate ketchup, especially on pizza. But I keep quiet.

The person approaches, tells her that asking for ketchup is offensive to the chef, implying the pizza isn’t good enough, when it already is. Adding ketchup would alter the taste and isn’t his original creation.

I’m sitting there, quietly stuffing my face so I don’t burst out laughing.

She, who usually has a comeback for everything, had no idea how to react.

That person was the owner of Tanto Pizzeria.

That gf is now my wife.

And yes, that was the last time she ever added ketchup to pizza.
