One of Gulzar saab's rare onscreen appearances was in Nana Patekar's film Wajood, where he made a guest appearance as himself. Gulzar sb had signed Nana to play the lead protagonist on his next film, Hu Tu Tu, around the same time.

But there is another interesting connection here, involving the film's director, N. Chandra. He had started his career as a clapper boy with Gulzar saab on Parichay and later worked as his assistant on films like Namkeen. Years later, when Chandra turned director, Nana Patekar played the lead protagonist in his early films, including Ankush and Pratighaat.

So, when N. Chandra was making Wajood, he requested his guru, Gulzar saab, to make a friendly appearance, and Gulzar saab graciously obliged. Since his dialogues were dubbed later, the magical voice is completely missing.

When I first met him, out of awe and awkwardness I fiddled with my hair. He slapped my hand away and said 'hero ki tarah Baal mat bana...tu actor hai'!
He didn't flatter you. He didn't tell you what you wanted to hear. He told you what you needed to hear. That was Nana. Straightforward. Rough, honest and had the most beautiful smile.
He always had a strange way of showing affection. He would shout at you first, and then somewhere between the third or fourth insult, you realised you were being hugged. He loved me and I loved him back.
He was a mentor, a teacher, a critic and a friend who beat me and everyone else around him in carrom game after game and relished his victories.  
Nana your intensity, laughter , madness and love will always stay with us. I just wish we had time to have more conversations, another argument, another cup of tea and a game of carrom.
You have left a void not only in the world of cinema but in the hearts of all Indians and the world. All I can say is, I will miss you dearly and carry your words in my heart till the end of time....'hero banne ke chakar mein actor mat khona'
May your soul rest in peace Nana and Allah bless you. The Heavens will be blessed to have you... a masterful actor and an unbeatable carrom champion. Love you and miss you dearly!! Too soon my Hero Actor! RIP.

“When I retired, Cristiano wrote something about me that I will never forget.

He said, ‘We won everything there was to win on the pitch, but the biggest achievement is our friendship.’

People probably read it and thought it was just a beautiful retirement message.

I knew exactly what he meant.

I have known Cristiano long enough to remember when neither of us had anything. Then Madrid came, Champions Leagues came, Portugal came, Euro 2016 came.

I have seen him happy. I have seen him furious. I have seen him injured and still wanting to play.

So when somebody tells me Cristiano Ronaldo woke up at 41 years old and decided, ‘Today I will destroy everything I spent more than twenty years building with Portugal because I sat on the bench,’ forgive me if I don’t believe the story is that simple.

Cristiano can be difficult. So was I.

But stupid? No.

He knows what Portugal means to his legacy.

That’s why this hurts me.

Because since I stopped playing, I watch Portugal differently. I see things from outside now. And too often since Fernando Santos left, it feels like we’re managing situations after they’ve already become problems instead of making sure they never become problems.

We saw confusion around the team at the World Cup. Now our captain leaves a camp and says one day he will tell the Portuguese people ‘the truth.’

How do we even arrive there?

I remember Cristiano once telling me after a difficult Portugal game, ‘Pepe, people think because I complain, I don’t respect decisions.’

I said, ‘Brother, sometimes you complain too much.’

He laughed.

Then he said, ‘But tell me the truth first. After that, I can accept anything.’

That’s Cristiano.

If you tell him he’s starting, he’ll prepare to start. If you tell him he’s on the bench, he’ll be angry perhaps, but he’ll prepare for the bench.

What you cannot do with somebody like him is make him believe one thing and then make him discover another.

I don’t know everything that was said in those rooms. Cristiano will speak when he wants to speak.

But I know my friend.

And when a relationship between Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo reaches the point where he packs his things, leaves camp and says, ‘One day I’ll tell you the truth,’ I don’t only ask what Cristiano did.

I ask how Portugal allowed it to reach that point.

Twenty-three years.

More than 200 matches.

He stayed when we lost. He stayed when we changed coaches. He stayed when people said he was finished. He stayed when younger players began taking his place.

At some point, somebody also has to stand by him.

Maybe Cristiano’s time with Portugal was always going to end soon.

But after everything he gave us, Portugal should have been capable of giving him a better ending than this.

That’s not me defending Cristiano Ronaldo the footballer.

That’s me standing beside my friend.

He did it for me enough times.”
