Are we actually reaching peak oil? Vehicles in operation (VIO) in light vehicles (Passenger Cars and Light Trucks) now consists of about 3.5 % EVs. Around 73 million EVs are now in the global fleet.
The Internal Combustion Engine VIO peaked in 2019, and since then, as more ICE vehicles are presumably being scrapped than added. We still have around 1.3 bn ICE light vehicles in VIO.
Consumption to light vehicles represents around 25 % (this is the largest) of global oil demand, the rest being distributed on trucks, buses, shipping (20 %), petrochem (15%), Aviation (7-8 %). We haven't seen shrinking of oil demand yet, as freight and aviation has increased and displaced the little slowdown on light vehicles. But it wont do that forever.
The progress of EVs are being added to VIO is rapid, and will make a larger impact every year. Next year, we will already see around 100 million EVs, and yet another year where more ICE cars are scrapped, than added.
Oil price is not as low as it should be, because of geopolitical factors, and the world is currently producing more oil than natural demand.
Soon, light vehicles will consume less than shipping, trucks and buses. Could 2025-2026 be the peak?

@ValueAnalyst1 @Kirby990230711 For cars, tesla are not importing batteries from China to USA... the big news here is that this is something generally positive for tesla. While tesla have perhaps a little import from China for other parts, it is miniscule compared to competitions' reliance.

Obviously they dont pay fees for cars made in Shanghai or Berlin where they rely on Chinese cells.

Adding a new variant isn't going to give them the volume to become the largest car maker. That will come from new models in new segments / form factors. Compact vehicle, sub compact, van, wagon.

@elonmusk @wholemars Consumers sadly like new nameplates, not variants. Even if the new model Y has undergone so much continuous improvement it's already a new model from its original design - mainstream buyers have trouble understanding that. That's why adding a number to an iPhone works

Hi @elonmusk @tesla can we get "automatic" parking payments to our cars? built in app, similar to easypark or parkmobile. Will be needed for robotaxis also.
Plus, parking rules can be quite complicated in European cities and this would help!
