iPhone 5s was the best design ergonomically. Perfect size to reach across the screen with one thumb, no camera bulge, fingerprint sensor, nice materials, and 33% lighter than the latest iPhone 17 Air.
Facing a similar issue I’m really interested what you’ve ended up doing here.
I agree that icons + text are better and also that dropdowns with hidden actions often cause more friction, but on the other hand this is exactly the case where you might want to expose the visual a little better, and not hover it fully.
