The reality is that Trump's teams are not trying to negotiate between Ukraine and Russia--they are trying to condition the American people to accept major concessions to Putin. There is no negotiating here--just abject surrender.
Some outlets are already falling for White House spin that none of this was orchestrated, everyone was taken aback by Zelensky’s behavior. Sure looks like they’re loving every minute of it to me. (Also, it’s the work of seconds to see where and when Zelensky has said “thank you”):
Here I react to the shameful encounter between American leaders and media and the Ukrainian president. No doubt there were more, but I saw five failures on our side: of hospitality, decency, democracy, strategy, and independence. Please watch and share.

I’m still processing what we saw in the Oval Office and it’s difficult to put into words how disgusted and ashamed I am.
This was a coordinated assault on an ally to benefit a dictator and authoritarian regime. Trump and Vance aren’t just Putin’s puppets, they’re his assets.
Cyber attacks are the main way Russia engages us. An important bit of context as we choose an alliance with Russia over historical alliances with richer and more reliable countries who, to state the obvious, do not attack us all the time on cyber.
Trump and Vance are not selling out Ukraine because of anything Zelenskyy said to them.
Trump and Vance are selling out Ukraine because of things Putin and Musk said to them.
Trump and Vance have declared themselves to be on Russia's side in the Russo-Ukraine war. This is a catastrophic mistake for America's national security. And let's be clear: Trump and Vance now personally own that policy. It is not the view of a majority of Americans of either or no political party.
We are a completely different country from what we were 2 months ago. Bully. Aggressor. Putin suck-up. Betrayer of allies. Rude. Crude. Dishonest. The most dishonorable display by an American president in our lifetimes.
If you want a measure of the scale of the transatlantic rift, consider this: I am told yesterday was the 1st time since 1945 the US voted with Russia & against Europe at the UN on an issue of European security. Just let that sink in. 1/4
If "Zelenskyy refuses to sign the (rare earth minerals) deal, he was warned during the talks with Kellogg that Ukraine could lose access to Musk’s Starlink satellite internet system, which provides crucial connectivity to the Ukrainian military"

The premise of American foreign policy to Ukraine, today, is one of grievance. It is worth patiently considering the proposals. They reveal little about Ukraine, but much about America in February 2025.

No, The Donald’s ingenious plan to sever Russia from its vassal dependence on China through insults directed at Zelensky, betrayal of Ukraine, and pandering to Putin’s desires will not succeed.
However, what he will certainly achieve with his antics is a catastrophic discrediting of America’s global leadership, a reckless, unnecessary, and absurd confrontation with Europe, and, essentially, the end of the Pax Americana, all amidst the most vulgar buffoonery.
None of this has anything to do with effectiveness, or “lethality,” or promoting “warfighters," or any other buzzwords. It is praetorianism, plain and simple, and it is an assault on our military and our democracy.
