@heyeaslo 👋

[John Rauser @jrauser]

My son's a little worried that Santa may skip our house because he was sometimes bad this year. I explained that Santa uses an exponentially weighted moving average to compute your goodness score, so more recent datapoints dominate and he's probably fine.

Apophenia: The tendency to see patterns in random data.

[Data Science Fact @DataSciFact]

When you hear that a method is optimal, ask 'By what criteria?' and 'Subject to what constraints?'

[Data Science Fact @DataSciFact]

'Two words explain the classical preference for parametric models: mathematical tractability.' -- Brad Efron & Trevor Hastie

[Data Science Fact @DataSciFact]

'Bias is a learner's tendency to consistently learn the same wrong thing.' -- Pedro Domingos

[Data Science Fact @DataSciFact]

You always have prior information before you do an experiment, because *something* motivated you to do the experiment.

by today's definition, y=mx+b is an artificial intelligence bot that can tell you where a line is going

Statistics: you can't add probabilities like that!

Machine learning: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it improves my model performance

[Data Science Fact @DataSciFact]

"There are no outliers. There are only measurements which do not accord with your theory about the thing of interest." -- Matt Briggs

[Data Science Fact @DataSciFact]

One person's meta data is another person's data. It's all data, just different perspectives.

"Why is this not converging?!

Wait, I think I messed up this term in the regularizer.

I'll just flip this sign and…"

'Variance is the tendency to learn random things irrespective of the real signal.' -- Pedro Domingos

[Data Science Fact @DataSciFact]

'A Bayesian is one who, vaguely expecting a horse, and catching a glimpse of a donkey, strongly believes he has seen a mule.'

[Data Science Fact @DataSciFact]

Some people are born to data science.
Others have data science thrust upon them.

[Data Science Fact @DataSciFact]

Naive Bayes can be a good classifier, but it's a bad estimator.
