I'm not sure why subscription models are still so dominant. People used to pay plenty for version updates that mattered. Would they not today? Far as I know, offline unlocked software was making money, still makes money, and people like it for certain products.
@ThePrimeagen I'm banking on it for my next applications. Llms are good at extracting architecture and reimplementing with strong context. So I am co-building v0.1 extracting and reimplementing with Socratic steps v0.2. hope is a 2-4x speedup to stable 0.3
@AndrewYang Why? How? For what? For who? How will they actually benefit? Getting tired of these politicians blatantly disregarding cost to serve and assuming cost increases in services is anything to buy abject managerial failure by elected and recruited employees.
Odd about fedora. On windows, I always felt like I needed to upgrade my hardware. I'd build something ground up fast, and within a year I was waiting for new chips. Built fast again (5800x non 3d) a few years ago, started running workstation, and I still don't feel much a need.
@techhdive@zuess05 That sounds like a bad corporate architecture and incompetent executive class. Probably too common. Trick is, you need to delete the layers to measure their impact. Empire builders won't even run the experiment.
America got wronged by business trends in a couple ways. The woke ended merit. Naive accounting let idiots offshore critical skills and tank professional development, communities, and the businesses that lost key talent. Then came scrum, and hippies got 6 figs for nada. 2030?
@GregorySchier I went the fedora route. Wonderful with AMD as display gpu. I put all my Nvidia stuff in a separate server. Everything is reasonably happy.
I wonder if government is really better the effort to remove people from process. And a paradox missed is that it takes a lot of people to maintain and modify autonomous processes.
@davepl1968 I think it's a fun idea. What's conscious, if it is, is the computer itself, not a process operating in its innards. Makes sense. My stomach digesting food I wouldn't immediately see as conscious. Likewise, running compute for base power need not be. Llm's are poogas.
@elonmusk@AndrewYang I'm not sure I agree on 'best'. Having the federal government collect for uniform distribution is expensive and likely unnecessary. The IRS is built for payroll and property tax audit and collection. When a million robots work for free electricity and park in subsidized garages..
