Wow, finally serious headway has been made on deriving the periodic table of elements from underlying quantum mechanics: the first 50 elements are done, using a combination of simulations (quantum Monte Carlo) and new math tricks...

It had always vexed me that we couldn't derive chemistry from physics in this way.  Still vexing that we can't do it by pure analytical calculations, OTOH there's no reason to expect the physical universe to respect our limitations of patience, lifespan or short-term memory in the implicit calculations it makes...

This sort of result is a reminder to me that the real nexus of cognition on the planet is the collective mind of scientists / engineers / artists / etc. ... PLUS our computing and communication machinery...
