Veterans Suicide, The Second Wound:

An argument that veterans are not primarily lost to trauma, but to the vacancy left where purpose used to be.

We keep telling ourselves that veterans are killed by what happened to them over there. But only one in four who died by suicide last year had a PTSD diagnosis, and across four million service members, deployment made almost no difference. What made the difference was separation. The rates spike six to twelve months after the uniform comes off.

The military answers the questions most people spend a lifetime circling: who am I, who needs me, what am I for. Then one Friday it stops answering them.

Some veterans come home wounded. Nearly all of them come home vacant. We treat the wound and ignore the vacancy — and purpose, it turns out, is measurable, and protective, and something we could actually give back.

Today, in America roughly 17 veterans kill themselves every day. Yesterday, 17 took their own lives, by the end of today it will be 17 more, and tomorrow another 17.

⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING: CHILD ABUSE

This beautiful little girl was 3-year-old Abygaile Bennett, who suffered unimaginable abuse at the hands of her own father, Justin Bennett.

In the days before her death, Abygaile suffered broken ribs and a broken back. The beating that ultimately killed her was reportedly so severe that it caused a catastrophic rupture of her heart.

She was THREE YEARS OLD.

Evidence of the abuse reportedly included video of Bennett forcing a hot pepper into her mouth as punishment. Bennett later admitted to repeatedly beating his daughter and causing her death.

Prosecutors will recommend 50 years to life in prison rather than pursue the death penalty.

And perhaps the most heartbreaking part: there were warnings that these children were in danger.

Abygaile deserved protection. She deserved a childhood. She deserved to grow up.

Instead, at just three years old, her little body endured injuries no child should ever suffer.

Rest in peace, sweet Abygaile. 💔
