Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel – awarded the 2026 medicine prize – discovered a remarkable protein, channelrhodopsin, in a single-celled alga.

Hegemann wondered how Chlamydomonas, a single-celled alga, is able to swim towards a light source. In the early 2000s, he and Georg Nagel discovered channelrhodopsin, an algal protein with unique properties, found on the surface of the cell. When it is illuminated by blue light, a channel opens through the protein. Charged ions then flow into the cell, creating an electrical impulse. They found that regardless of which cell they put the protein in, those cells became light sensitive.

🚨🚨WOW! This is absolutely amazing to see that Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have won the Nobel prize in medicine for their optogenetic research! Visual optogenetics is a therapeutic modality that uses Gene Therapy to deliver a light-sensitive protein to cells in the retina. This mechanism of entering light to the eye can then stimulate these cells to produce a visual signal that is sent to the brain and thus “overriding” the retinal cells and to restore vision to vision impaired patients. This mechanism is already in clinical development and the most advanced optogenetic therapy is currently Nanoscope Therapeutics’ MOGENRY (formally known MCO-010) - an Optogenetic Gene Therapy aimed to restore vision in Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) patients with a severe vision loss which is waiting for an FDA approval! Absolutely amazing!

1 | day 1 started from KLIA on sunday night, by headlamp, while the rest of us were fighting for shuttle buses. skip-the-jam W! 🙈

2 | day 2: 162km of palm-estate gravel at 28.1 km/h average in 28°C humidity. fit amateurs average ~20km/h on gravel. his bike computer logged all this at 48% intensity. basically his cruising pace is our race pace

3 | likely this IS the prep for SG. marina bay is the sweatiest race of the year (drivers lose up to 3kg), and a week riding through malaysian humidity is basically cycling in a sauna

4 | it reportedly doubles as training for the UCI gravel world champs he qualified for. and he's riding with tiffany cromwell, an actual pro cyclist (and his partner!) 😍

Sepang 🇲🇾 just proved yet again that every F1 is and was right, we never asked for an increase in street races that are shit, Miami and Madrid are the worst tracks in decades, it shows that old school legendary tracks give everyone the thrill they want, it also proved form is temporary class is permanent with Vintage Verstappen, Hammertime Hamilton and El Plan Alonso all being the best drivers as you’d expect, it also gave us more reason to ditch these embarrassing ai engines that are pathetic and actually cringe for the sport. Bring back screaming V8’s and bring back these old school tracks that create epic and memorable races, we will be taking about how good this race was for years, we forgot about the Madring before the checkered flag. #MalaysianGrandPrix 🏁
