The dome of the mosque was completed in 1905 and was covered by 72,000 golden pieces.

The shrine was heavily damaged by massive bombings carried out by 2 separate terrorist attacks in 2006 & 2007. However, the dome and minarets were restored and the shrine reopened in April 2009

مَرْقَد ٱلْإِمَامَيْن عَلِيّ ٱلْهَادِي وَٱلْحَسَن ٱلْعَسْكَرِيّ

The Al-Askari shrine, located in Samarra, is a remarkable example of Iraq’s ancient Islamic architecture. The shrine was built in 944 and is one of Iraq's four holiest mosques.
