Sneak peek from the lab. Work in progress of the real-time face tracking, via iPhone, Clone v2 cinematic rig. Simple viewport capture, no lighting or shading.
Effective expression capture is key for conveying emotions accurately with your Clones. Our new cinematic rig has been constructed with flexibility in mind.
We've carefully refined the 52 blend shapes that drive the facial expressions, and the face controls themselves, to achieve a more natural look. We have more iteration cycles to go through before we hit our target but you can already see a great difference from v1.
This upgrade opens up a world of possibilities, from high-fidelity dynamic VRMs adaptable to various platforms to virtual production capabilities and V-Tubing with improved face filters.
Our goal is simple: To help eliminate technical barriers and provide a more seamless and inclusive utility for all of our community, all while ensuring quality remains at the core of everything we do.
Gonna give my thoughts on where I think @RTFKT / #CloneX stand in today's landscape & what kind of North Star I think they need to chase going forward. Over the past year I've already detailed many of the finer issues & ways to address them (see my stickied thread) but this is going to be a fresh 10000ft / 5 year view.
THE PAST
The team suggested at the end of 2022 that 2023 would be about converging all ecosystems/assets into a singular cohesive clear vision where everything would make sense. That for some reason hasn't transpired & to the outside it continues to look like they're just making random cool stuff they think is dope (which is their words paraphrased, not my speculation).
Can't say that approach has worked - they're too spread out & often don't have enough resources to really flesh out ecosystems they put out. For example the Cryptokick/EvoX ecosystem which was revealed through the notorious MNLTH was not touched for 18 months, and in the past months was revisited seemingly only to release a new physical pair of shoes which didn't even align with the originally touted screen-based vision.
There's still no sign of the vial ecosystem opening up to community creators or brand collaborations & no update to the utility/mechanics beyond minor visual upgrades to the in-house EvoX line. This kind of approach doesn't inspire confidence in collectors or creators. The same lack of focus/follow-through is evident in the other ecosystems (like Pods) & many of the top creators have naturally elected to focus their efforts elsewhere.
The supposed "god-tier" CloneX core collectors meanwhile are starting to be relegated to an access pass to questionably priced 'luxury' physical goods that neither attract too many web3 users (who have been putoff by the web2 vibes) or web2 users (who still see NFTs somewhere between a scam & a dumb gimmick) and RTFKT making things like shoes that take 9 months to deliver or physical vial 'toys' only validates their skepticism.
THE PRESENT
Over two years have now passed since CloneX was launched. While they still have the edge in certain areas (3D avatars, digital wearables, creator community, Nike & physical/merch quality/scale), there's also a lot that's happened both in web3 & web2 to the point where the brand's opportunities aren't as vast/open-ended as before.
Even within the Nike Virtual Studios, which RTFKT is a part of, there's now @dotSWOOSH which is launched & starting to find their feet & hitting out deliverables. I highlighted before how I felt there was ample of difference between the two but perhaps because of the crypto bear market, we've seen RTFKT shy away from their strengths in the metaverse/digital domain & be somewhat of a test bed for Nike's web3 fueled merch plans.
RTFKT's numbers in their physical sales have probably been so miniscule compared to the scale Nike's used to that I can't imagine this approach getting any Nike execs out of their seat. At the moment if they viewed RTFKT simply as a sunk cost with a lean overhead that fits within their web3 R&D budget, no one ought to be surprised. And that's kind of a sad place to be for what was very briefly one of the most intriguing startups in the world.
If RTFKT's physical sales are not enough to warrant huge hype - either in web2 or web3 - then it also makes the "access pass" god that is CloneX a less desirable asset, and the floor price certainly reflects that.
Even on the digital side, RTFKT has shown no sign of developing a game or a metaverse & even their integration/"partnership" with @oncyber looks head-scratchingly at a standstill at this point. While Nike might be all-in on digital, it doesn't seem that a company of that size is willing to risk a full-blown shift to tech & running a metaverse platform. Between @UnrealEditorFN in web2 and @OthersideMeta in web3, that race is prob already lost anyways.
So where does that leave RTFKT & by extension CloneX? If physical products are not getting enough excitement, and there is no willingness to create excitement via a game or metaverse, what kind of future does the brand have exactly?
THE FUTURE
If RTFKT is to carve out its own path out of Nike's shadows & become a successful culturally relevant brand, it needs to stop obsessing over "merging worlds" & focus more on "creating worlds". If you want out-of-this-world valuations, you need to work on not-in-this-world inventions.
When @punk6529 first started tweeting his disdain for NFT brands trying so hard to do web2 type products like "merch", I felt somewhat annoyed initially at the gatekeeping.
But I think he's got a point. And to RTFKT's defense I think they go way beyond the normal 'merch' approach adopted by most web3 brands. But at the end of the day it's still an AF1, it's still a suitcase, it's still a hoodie. You can put an NFC chip, or some AR effects when viewed on some random app but that's still too close to the standard world. People have something tangible to compare to & intrigue/apparent-worth/demand will always be tethered to reality. A slight tech upgrade does not turn a commodity into a grail. It can be a part of your overall offering, but it can't be THE offering.
When you try to appeal to both web2 folks and web3 folks, you probably end up appealing to neither group. I think web2 folks would be more intrigued if you tilted way more in web3 direction than just release a web2 product with what they probably view as a web3 gimmick addon.
So I think RTFKT needs to go back to innovating & pushing the limits of a technology/space that's still yet to be meaningfully explored. For example the idea of breeding digital shoes might sound dumb AF to some 50 year old boomer but the young Fortnite generation should find that way more interesting than yet another AF1 colorway if done right.
📣This part is important: if RTFKT / CloneX is to have any influence/relevance in the grand metaverse future to come, then they need to find their USP within that & focus HARD on it while they still can.
Thankfully the CloneX OG vision was on-point / ahead of its time, so there's not much pivoting that needs to be done but rather a recalibration of efforts (some of which might be underway through things like the upcoming INVTRY app). Digital identity/self-expression through avatars/wearables/collectibles created by passionate community creators or popular/culturally significant collabs is EXACTLY what the future of entertainment & socialization is headed towards.
Between UE/Fortnite's rapid shift towards a metaverse , AI making UGC infinitely cheaper & higher quality, and the progress on the hardware side with Apple getting into the mix - we're on the cusp of this big shift in culture that has for generations been the fantasy of movies/shows/books. Metaverse + UGC + NFTs is the magic mix & each piece looks increasingly ready for prime time.
RTFKT's role in this future, IMHO, is to be the artefact grails that everyone in these digital worlds dreams of owning/flexing with just as the Jordan's served that purpose in the 90s.
If RTFKT/Nike want to be culturally significant in these worlds/platforms they're not owners of, they need to go above & beyond so that everyone in those worlds yearns for them to be adopted/integrated.
It's a strategy that the likes of @Chainlink is using in the blockchain world: instead of making their own blockchain & becoming everyone's hated competitor, they focus on delivering unmatchable value/quality add-on in a domain the blockchains are not focused around & thus win everywhere all at once.
If you think about what might be required to be interoperable grails, you'd probably think of certain factors: legendary collabs (@takashipom, @KingJames), open web3 ethos (@RTFKTcreators), large scale reach both culturally & logistically (@Nike), and potential to impact the real world (@RTFKT NFC / Phygital Twins). RTFKT is one of the few companies in the world currently positioned to achieve this lofty & very lucrative goal.
These aren't gameable or easy to disrupt advantages like some social media metrics either (😉) - they're HUGE competitive advantages that create barriers to entry for any would be competitor. When users in the metaverse wants to rock a sneaker, the Dunk Genesis should be THE clear choice. That's exactly the feeling I got when I first watched their Dunk Genesis CKs trailer: if this vision is fulfilled, no one will be able to compete with this & no one will want to wear anything else.
It's actually a similar thing with the upcoming Animus release: how many companies can release thousands of unique 3D Pokemon style pets that are compatible with something as deep as RTFKT/dotSwoosh's wearables ecosystem? Wouldn't you want your pet to at least have the option to to wear Murakami AF1s too in the ideal metaverse? Users will want it, which should spur the platforms/games to adopt it, and it will potentially become something that will be a detriment to the metaverse platform/game that choose to ignore it. That's how much focus there should be on quality/innovation & standing out.
This can be achieved in a myriad of ways, ONE of which is indeed the NFC chip infused phygital twins 'forging' that has been a huge focus over the past year. Sprinkling in customization/gamification elements to assets through EvoX style evolution paths is another. While physicals suffer from being stale static goods following release, digital items can 'live' through MNTLH like controlled processes or through oracle-updated dynamic means. Perhaps not intuitive to many but digital assets can be MUCH more magical than physical ones & it's paramount to embrace that upside instead of designing products around a physical-first mindset.
Ultimately though it's about creating the best collector centric ecosystems (around AR addons, pet drip, housing decorations, or anything else in 3D that can turn into a sought-after digital collectible) made by the most talented creators & in partnership with hottest brands backed by future-proof NFT tech.
That's why I've long been highlighting the importance of cultivating the most 'based' creator ecosystem possible while the early start is there. These people will soon have ample of opportunities elsewhere if you lose them so establishing frameworks/incentives that create stickiness both on collector & creator side is of upmost importance. I believe a token is the best way to set this up, but I've beat that dead horse enough as of late..
So how do we actually get from here to being highly sought-after interoperable wearable/collectible grails desired by all?
That is a question I'd love to dig into, but this post has run long enough.
Hopefully I've given a glimpse of a potential North Star that is worth pursuing & which RTFKT is well suited to chase. I know I've personally sometimes struggled with making sense of RTFKT's strategy/execution over the years so this is the kind of spelling-out/planning-out I would have wish came from them. I think as off-track as some might view the current train to be, I do think it's possible to get back on track rather quickly...but it's got to happen soon...and that requires laser-eyed intention & focus!
TLDR
RTFKT should strive to create & cultivate creator-centric ecosystems around creating interoperable metaverse grails that are the envy of all. Clones can then finally be gods.. of something much grander than initially thought.
✌️& Happy New Year to all!

@KamileonX@RTFKT The missing part is that they are providing only one part of information from the ecosystem. Without a clear detail on how the vials will be used or what will we able to do with the evolved Dunks (forgeable?), it's forcing us to speculate into "bet or fold".
1) @RTFKT is not a pure "web3 company" anymore & it probably hasn't been for a while. This has implications for #CloneX holders & wider industry in ways you probably wouldn't expect. A 🧵on the existential threat facing NFTs & how one company is taking a step in a new direction.
