The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) condemns the violence that has marred the Cape Town taxi strike, which started on Thursday and has left thousands of commuters stranded, several of them injured and at least two people killed.

While the ACDP had hoped that talks between all stakeholders within this deadlock would resolve the challenges presented, we were saddened to realise that there unfortunately were no satisfactory and lasting solutions that resulted. We support all forms of intervention to stop the strike, including the court interdict already issued on behalf of Golden Arrow Bus Service and the possible interdict to be sought by the Western Cape government. Continuous, peaceful talks must be pursued by all the stakeholders to resolve the impasse. We agree, however, that this cannot take place amid the violence that is currently taking place.

The ongoing strike is also affecting learning and teaching in schools, and loss of income due to absenteeism which might lead to loss of jobs. Community health centers, clinics and community day-care centers are not spared the wrath of the violence.

We therefore call on all parties involved to do everything in their power to stop the ongoing violence amicably, including the torching of buses, taxis and private cars.
Above all, law enforcement agencies must also deal with those taking advantage of this unfortunate situation. Swift arrests must be made, followed by successful conviction of the criminal elements. Both commuters and businesses must be protected against all forms of criminality.

Message from the mayor re. Ongoing taxi strike in Capetown.

Dear Residents of Cape Town,
Geagte inwoners van Kaapstad,
Bahlali abathandekayo baseKapa,

Given ongoing acts of violence and intimidation perpetrated by taxi associations in our city, I would like to update you on where we are today, Monday 7 August at 15h00:

1) We will not negotiate with a (literal) gun to our heads. There can be no further discussions with local Santaco leadership until their violence stops. Simple. We call on Santaco to stop the violence immediately.

2) The rule of law is not up for negotiation. We cannot negotiate which portions of the law will apply to some people and not to others. This is not the way we will ever build a successful society in South Africa. The law applies equally to everyone. We will apply the law without fear or favour.
3) We are protecting residents and commuters by opening roads, running buses with escorts, and arresting those perpetrators of violence. Our first priority is protecting residents from violent taxi thugs.
Most road closures and blockages have been cleared very quickly, and traffic is free flowing for the most part.

4) On Friday there was a productive meeting of City, Province and Santaco where constructive proposals were made and agreed to. On Saturday, Santaco made entirely new demands, and since then there has only been an escalation of violence. Santaco is free to end their strike and accept the terms of Friday’s discussion at any time.

If Santaco does not choose to end their strike, then we will need to be prepared to stay the course. We are prepared to do so.

As ever I’m grateful for the many people from every neighbourhood and community who have been in contact constantly to reaffirm their support for doing what is right despite difficulty.
