How hot is this El Nino?
Not only is the sea-surface temperatures in the Nino 3.4 region on June 13th the hottest on record since 1982, the temperature is a mind-blowing 0.72°C hotter than any previous June 13th.
Pakistan is now world's #2 solar panel importer.
More than India, more than entire Gulf.
Almost none of it policy-driven. Grid power is costly & unreliable so households go solar.
But does that push grid fees higher for everyone left behind?

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.
1/The FT chart by @jburnmurdoch on smartphones and fertility made me think Israel is an unusually clean place to look at this hypothesis. Three groups, varying along smartphone exposure × social conservatism, all inside one country. 🧵
As the first reanalysis data become available, I think I can say with a fairly high degree of confidence that the March 2026 heatwave will go down as the most anomalously extreme heat event ever observed at any time of year in the southwestern U.S.

As of Feb. 22, Arctic sea-ice extent is 2nd lowest on record for the date.
Will a new record low maximum be set this year? The Climate 8-ball is drinking the 5th.
The govt's Student Loan Plan 2 repayment freeze in April 2027 must be reversed. It isn't moral.
I'm concerned that my debate with Kemi Badenoch this morning distracts from the most immediate problem. In April 2027 Rachel Reeves will freeze the Plan 2 student loan threshold until 2030 which by then will increase graduate repayments by £300/yr more.
This is effectively a unilateral negative breach of the student loan contract. Students were told the threshold would rise with average earnings. No commercial lender would be allowed to do this. The govt shouldn't do it either.
Changing the terms of future students loans is a political decision - people may not like it but it is transparent. Negatively changing the terms of contracts already signed, and long in place, is a breach of natural justice.
Another fun-packed graphic:
In 2025, Earth experienced the planetary heating equivalent of about 379,000,000 (379 million) Hiroshima bombs, or about 23.9 zetajoules, the 4th highest gain on record.

The latest data from CERES shows the 12-month running average for the Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) spiking back up, now at 12.01 Hiroshimas per Second (Hps).
That's over 1 million Hiroshimas per day in planetary heating.
The real sign British education has failed is the number of people responding to this chart with "that’s what happens when too many people go to university"
HE has expanded in all of these countries, and in every one apart from UK that didn’t erode the graduate earnings premium.
