🚆 MANGALURU RAILWAY JURISDICTION TRANSFER TO SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY — A NEW BEGINNING FOR DAKSHINA KANNADA 🚆
We wholeheartedly welcome, strongly support and celebrate the historic decision to transfer the Mangaluru railway jurisdiction from Southern Railway's Palakkad Division to the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway (SWR). This is not merely an administrative change; for Mangaluru and Coastal Karnataka, it is a long-awaited opportunity for a new beginning in railway development.
For many decades, the Palakkad Division has ignored the Mangaluru region despite the enormous revenue generated here. Mangaluru has been one of the highest revenue-generating areas under Southern Railway and the resources generated from this region could have been utilised to develop Mangaluru's railway stations and infrastructure to world-class standards. Instead, Mangaluru has repeatedly received step-motherly treatment and remained neglected when it came to railway development.
One of the best examples is Train No. 16575/76 Yesvantpur–Mangaluru Junction Gomateshwara Express. When this train was introduced, the initial demand was to run it between Yesvantpur and Mangaluru Central, but Palakkad Division did not accept the proposal and the train was made to terminate at Mangaluru Junction citing platform constraints at Mangaluru Central. At that time, we could perhaps understand the situation because Mangaluru Central had only three platforms. But surprisingly, the same Palakkad Division subsequently introduced Train No. 22609/10 Mangaluru Central–Coimbatore Intercity Superfast Express and allocated a platform for it. So the question naturally arises: if a platform was not available for the Gomateshwara Express, how was a platform available for the Coimbatore Intercity? Why was a Bengaluru–Mangaluru service not given the same priority to Mangaluru Central?
Mangaluru Central is the main railway station of Mangaluru city and one of the five "Central" railway stations in India, yet it is unfortunate that it has remained among the most neglected in terms of development. There have been proposals to develop Mangaluru Central as a world-class railway station, but even after years, the station has not received the transformation that a major city like Mangaluru deserves. A city that generates so much railway revenue should not have its main railway terminal left behind like this.
Even though Mangaluru is in Karnataka, proper railway connectivity with various cities of Karnataka is still inadequate. If we look at the trains operating from Mangaluru Central, out of around 35 trains, approximately 23 are towards the Kerala side, while only around six each are towards Karnataka and the Konkan side. This is the fate of Mangaluru! Mangaluru is a major city of Karnataka, yet its principal railway station has predominantly Kerala-bound connectivity while Karnataka-bound connectivity remains comparatively poor. We need substantially more direct trains from Mangaluru to Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hassan, Shivamogga, Hubballi,Belagavi,Ballari and other cities of Karnataka, along with better connectivity towards Konkan.
Mangaluru received an Amrit Bharat Express from Nagercoil, and we welcome every useful new service, but a train should not be introduced merely for the sake of its name. Who will travel if it runs at odd and inconvenient timings? Mangaluru needs useful, practical and passenger-friendly train timings and services.
Southern Railway also did not resume Train No. 16687/88 Mangaluru Central–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Navyug Express. Instead, the Navyug Express name continued with Train No. 16787/88 Tirunelveli–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Express, which was once running as the slip/link part of the Mangaluru Central–Katra Navyug Express. A prestigious long-distance service that once connected Mangaluru Central with North India should not have disappeared from Mangaluru. The demand for restoration of this important connectivity remains.
Another major issue is the complete lack of adequate importance given to Kannada and Tulu, the languages of this land. Even today, there are concerns about insufficient staff at catering stalls, restaurants and ticket counters, while staff posted at various locations of the station premises may not know Kannada or Tulu. Signboards, advertisements, name boards and instruction boards have also frequently given more prominence to Malayalam than to the local languages. We are not against Malayalam or the people of Kerala, but when Mangaluru is in Karnataka, Kannada and Tulu must receive their rightful importance. Railway stations in Mangaluru should reflect the language and identity of the region.
The long-pending doubling between Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction is another issue that must finally receive attention. Mangaluru's railway infrastructure must be developed according to its present and future requirements instead of repeatedly citing capacity and operational constraints.
Now that Mangaluru railway jurisdiction is being transferred to Mysuru Division, SWR, there are huge hopes among the people of Dakshina Kannada for development of the entire Mangaluru railway area, including Mangaluru Central, Mangaluru Junction, more trains from Karnataka and Konkan to Mangaluru Central and strengthening of the railway infrastructure between the two stations.
However, we strongly urge South Western Railway not to neglect Mangaluru Central, which is the main railway station of Mangaluru city and will now also assume even greater importance as the gateway and principal terminal(starting and ending point for trains) of the Mysuru Division on the Coastal Karnataka side.
At the same time, we strongly oppose any future attempt to bypass Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction through Padil bypass for the sake of running trains between Karnataka and Konkan without serving Mangaluru's principal stations. In the past, efforts were made to bypass both Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction, particularly for trains from Karnataka towards Konkan, including Train No. 16585/86 SMVT Bengaluru–Murdeshwar Express and we have strongly opposed such moves.
We oppose this even now because repeatedly bypassing Mangaluru's main stations will reduce their importance and will also reduce the presence of Karnataka-originating trains and Karnataka passengers at Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction. Ultimately, this could once again result in Kerala-bound railway interests/services gaining further prominence at the expense of Karnataka-originating connectivity, while Karnataka's own connectivity to its coastal city gets weakened. Mangaluru must not be reduced to a place through which trains simply pass without serving the city.
Therefore, future trains, especially any Vande Bharat Express, should run from Bengaluru to Mangaluru Central as a dedicated and meaningful service, wherever operationally feasible. Other dedicated passenger and express trains from various cities of Karnataka should also originate or terminate at Mangaluru Central and should not be extended towards Kerala or Konkan or routed through bypasses at the cost of Mangaluru's importance. Mangaluru needs more Karnataka-originating services and stronger direct connectivity with Karnataka.
We want to make it clear that this demand is not against Kerala or the people of Kerala. Our concern is that Mangaluru, despite being in Karnataka and generating enormous railway revenue, should not once again be made secondary to Kerala-bound railway interests. We respect everyone, but Mangaluru's railway development must primarily serve the people and needs of Mangaluru and Karnataka.
Mangaluru is a treasure for the railway system. It is a major passenger and freight-generating region, an important port-connected area and a strategic gateway between Karnataka, Kerala, Konkan and the rest of the country. The potential of Mangaluru is enormous and this potential should finally be utilised for the development of Mangaluru and Coastal Karnataka.
We therefore strongly support and celebrate the transfer of Mangaluru railway jurisdiction to South Western Railway and Mysuru Division. But this transfer should not merely change the railway map. It must bring a real change in development. We expect Mangaluru Central to be developed as a world-class railway station, Mangaluru Junction to be upgraded, doubling between Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction to be taken up, more Karnataka and Konkan connectivity to be provided, important long-distance services to be restored, practical train timings to be introduced, Kannada and Tulu to receive their rightful place and Mangaluru's main railway stations to be protected from unnecessary bypassing.
The people of Dakshina Kannada have waited for decades. Now is the time for Mangaluru's railway development!

Hi @Airtel_Presence ,@airtelindia
I had raised a request for shifting my connection but seems like no option to change with expected config, can u help with closing my connection, writing here as u guys have made it impossible to raise disconnection request on your app
Vande Bharat skipping Mangaluru Junction/Central for Padil is like a flight landing in a field 10 miles from the airport and calling it a "destination." 🤨
We need a proper station halt for the BLR-Goa VB, not a bypass stop with zero amenities.

SAVE MANGALURU – STOP THE PADIL BYPASS POLITICS & ROUTE VANDE BHARAT VIA MANGALURU
For many years, Mangaluru and Coastal Karnataka have been facing a systematic attempt to weaken our rightful railway connectivity. Certain anti-Mangaluru sentiments, popularly known as the Kundapura–Goa Lobby, have been constantly pushing one dangerous agenda – to bypass Mangaluru city completely from the railway map. Under the misleading slogan of “Padil Bypass efficiency,” this group is repeatedly lobbying to divert trains away from Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction, the two real and fully equipped railway stations that serve the heart of this city. Their latest move is to ensure that the proposed Bengaluru–Madgaon Vande Bharat Express runs entirely via Padil Bypass, deliberately skipping Mangaluru city.
Let us first expose their biggest false claim. They keep arguing that trains “waste up to 3 hours” by entering Mangaluru Junction and that the Padil Bypass saves enormous time. This is completely baseless and technically incorrect. In reality, trains running via the bypass often take more than 1.5 hours just to travel between Bantwal and Surathkal due to congestion and operational constraints. In the very same duration, a train can easily enter Mangaluru Junction, complete a simple locomotive change without any reversal, and proceed ahead smoothly. But this practical and passenger-friendly option is intentionally ignored only to push the bypass agenda and keep Mangaluru sidelined.
Another major deception is the propaganda surrounding the so-called “Padil station.” The truth is very clear – there is no railway station named Padil at Padil locality. The actual station near that area is Mangaluru Junction, located behind the new DC Office. What they misleadingly refer to as Padil station is actually situated nearly 4.4 km away from Padil locality itself and has poor road connectivity to the main city. Ironically, the distance from Padil DC Office to Mangaluru Central is only 5.1 km, whereas the distance to the so-called Padil station is almost 7 km. Yet these lobbyists falsely project Padil as the main railway hub of Mangaluru. This itself proves the level of misinformation being spread.
They further try to mislead the public by claiming that halts at Surathkal and Bantwal benefit Mangaluru passengers. This is completely untrue. Surathkal Railway Station is nearly 21 km away from Hampankatta, the real centre of Mangaluru city, and Bantwal Railway Station is about 24 km away. Any passenger getting down at these stations must spend extra money on autos or taxis and waste additional time to reach Mangaluru. Calling these stations as alternatives to Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction is nothing but deliberate deception aimed at justifying their bypass politics.
Now coming to the proposed Bengaluru–Madgaon Vande Bharat Express, which is one of the major issues today. A premium train like Vande Bharat is meant to connect major cities and economic hubs. Mangaluru is the largest city of Coastal Karnataka, a major port city, an education hub, a medical hub and a fast-growing IT destination. Skipping Mangaluru city while introducing a so-called premium train is not development – it is outright discrimination. Running Vande Bharat via Padil Bypass may save a few minutes on paper, but it will deny thousands of genuine passengers direct access to the city’s main railway stations and completely defeat the purpose of a premium service. At the same time, this very lobby is also pushing to disturb the timing of the lifeline Train No.16576 Gomateshwara Express from Mangaluru, only to accommodate Vande Bharat. This double attack on Mangaluru passengers clearly exposes their real intentions.
There is another important point that must be highlighted. While there is strong and long-pending demand for a dedicated Vande Bharat Express between Mangaluru and Bengaluru – two of the most important cities of Karnataka and South India – this demand is being completely ignored. Bengaluru is the Silicon City and major IT hub, and Mangaluru is rapidly emerging as a future IT hub and developing technology destination. Instead of fulfilling the genuine demand for a dedicated premium train connecting these two cities, attempts are being made to introduce a Goa-centric service that skips Mangaluru altogether. We strongly demand that a dedicated Vande Bharat Express must be started between Mangaluru Central and KSR Bengaluru / Yesvantpur to truly benefit Karnataka passengers.
The hypocrisy of the Kundapura–Goa lobby becomes even more evident here. They keep shouting that trains waste “time” at Mangaluru Junction, but they have absolutely no problem when trains take excessively long time between Bantwal and Surathkal via the bypass. They never question delays elsewhere on the Konkan route. They suddenly become time-saving experts only when it comes to avoiding Mangaluru. Their entire argument is not based on passenger benefit but on narrow regional interests aimed at weakening Mangaluru’s railway importance.
Let us apply their own logic back on them. If skipping stations and saving minutes is considered efficiency, then by the same logic all Konkan route trains should skip Kundapura station completely. After all, Udupi is the district headquarters and a major station. If Bantwal is being falsely projected as Mangaluru, then by that same argument Kundapura is nothing but Udupi. When trains already halt at Udupi, why should they waste additional time stopping at Kundapura? Let all trains skip Kundapura and move directly forward. We strongly demand the railway authorities to apply the same “time-saving logic” uniformly and not selectively target only Mangaluru passengers.
Coming to Panchaganga Express, the double standards are crystal clear. These same groups keep calling Panchaganga Express the lifeline of Coastal Karnataka. If it is truly the lifeline of Coastal Karnataka, then it must logically enter the main city of the region. Therefore, we strongly demand that Panchaganga Express should be routed via Mangaluru Junction and Mangaluru Central. Moreover, if the train is meant to serve Coastal Karnataka, what is the need for it to run up to Madgaon in Goa, which is outside Karnataka? Let it serve the people of Karnataka itself. Concerns like watering or operational issues are not valid excuses – Mangaluru Junction and Mangaluru Central are fully capable of handling all such requirements. Hence Panchaganga Express must be brought into Mangaluru city instead of being pushed further into Goa.
Their agenda is very clear – weaken Mangaluru, bypass the city, push more trains towards Goa, and deny the people of Dakshina Kannada their rightful connectivity. This is not railway development. This is regional politics using railway routes as weapons against Mangaluru.
Our stand is very clear and firm. Vande Bharat Express is welcome, but not by bypassing Mangaluru city. Any premium train on this corridor must necessarily run via Mangaluru Junction and Mangaluru Central. Existing lifeline trains like Gomateshwara Express must be fully protected without any timing changes. Panchaganga Express should be routed via Mangaluru city instead of being pushed further towards Goa. Decisions must be taken based on public interest and Karnataka’s benefit, not on pressure from a narrow regional lobby.
We request @RailMinIndia, @AshwiniVaishnaw sir, @VSOMANNA_BJP sir, @SWRRLY, @GMSRailway and @KonkanRailway to see through this misleading campaign and ensure that the interests of Mangaluru and Dakshina Kannada passengers are fully protected.
Mangaluru deserves connectivity, not discrimination. Padil Bypass politics must end now.
