Well, I was just reminded why Tesla's Solar Roof is not selling in high volume

Had a consultation call with one of Tesla's certified installers (American Home Contractors)

System size quoted:

12kW (12,000W)
Two Powerwall 3's

The cost range they provided for that was $180k - $200k! That's without any financing costs included

We have a very basic roof structure, nothing complicated as you can see below

Even if I were to subtract the cost for a premium roof in my area of $60,000 (which is very high, btw) and use the low end of AHC's quote and subtract $30k for the cost of the two Powerwalls (installed) that leaves a $90k cost for a 12kW solar system

That's $7.50/Watt using very generous assumptions - the typical price for solar ranges from $2 - $4/Watt

Remember, that $7.50 figure would be strictly for the solar portion - that's after removing the cost for a premium roof and the two Powerwalls

AHC said the cost from Tesla has continually gone up each year they started installing the Tesla Solar Roof

It's this type of thing I wish we got more communication from Tesla about...

• What's the primary driver of this cost inflation?
• What are the internal goals for this project now?
• Is there a plan to drive costs down?

Even if this system zeroed out our entire electric bill every year saving us ~$2,400 a year, that would still be a 50 year payback period. That's after subtracting $60k for the cost of a comparable premium roof!

I'd gladly pay a slight premium to support Tesla and the product is awesome, but this pricing is pretty ridiculous $TSLA
