@kimmelman@UncertainPod@nytimes Ty @kimmelman! This convo was one of the highlights of my year. As I mention in the ep, I've been a fan of yours since I started out in journalism (back in 2010 @ArchDaily) — not just for your writing, but your focus on architecture's greater responsibility: to make lives better.
@GugMat@today_explained@voxdotcom@rebleber@leahstokes Right - I need to look into the data, but my Spidey sense tells me that the health issues are likely less significant than the environmental impact of gas vs. Electric 🤔
@ThankElon@Jayzsa@Peter_Turchin Interestingly, according to @Peter_Turchin, every decade of unrest also shares a widespread incredulity that collapse could ever happen in THEIR time. I suppose it's human nature to complain how broken everything is — but not recognize how close we always are to falling apart
Our convo w/ @Peter_Turchin has been one of our most popular yet. Peter shared a copy of his new book with us (coming out this Spring) & it was an EXCELLENT read. We're hoping Peter will return when it's out so we can keep the conversation going. Let's hope he's wronger by then.
Scientist-turned-historian @Peter_Turchin is best known for his 2010 prediction that we were headed for serious unrest, circa 2020. Peter explains why he first applied his model towards the U.S. today—and his shock at what he found. Full ep at https://t.co/gqyQRiTnxv
I’ve been thinking about what Halloween costume I (and the hubby) might want to wear this year, and I had one idea that brought a gleeful smile to my face: what if we went as the hot-dog-fingers couple from Everything Everywhere All at Once?
.@vmquirk here - I was asked to explain the words “Hispanic,” “Latino,” and “LatinX” for my other pod, and (considering how much we talk about culture war stuff) I think it would also be interesting to #uncertainthings listeners to know about them — and WHY they’re so contentious
In sum — How to Change Your Mind — by @michaelpollan brought up fascinating philosophical questions of consciousness, reality, and our relationship to the universe. I highly recommend it — and I hear there's a good netflix series on it out too! - Signing off - @vmquirk
@mit_kab Hi! I'm freelancing - I do story editing and hosting but also consulting for companies (tech + arch/design companies). Thanks for crowd-sourcing!
I was lucky to get to follow-up w/ @vishaannyc for @urbanrootspod. LOVED watching him & my historic preservationist co-host @deqahcards bond over the idea of “community preservation” - an approach that is less about saving buildings, & more about giving communities what they need
Changing the world can feel crushingly impossible. But imagine: if we all felt inspired and activated by journalism/urbanism/storytelling to make our own corners of the world a bit better — consider how much more attainable the seemingly impossible would become.
We recently spoke with @vishaannyc for @UncertainPod, an urbanist I’ve admired for a while. Most architects speak in jargonese. Vishaan talks like a human — & works with journalists to create words/images that clearly communicate architecture’s potential to the urbanist layman
Loved this moment when @vishaannyc tells his fellow #Progressives it's time to embrace a more joyful future — and the original meaning of the #AmericanDream. (Withdraw thine knives!) Full ep on substack https://t.co/2Zdlu3ZY5k, https://t.co/9VwtBZktuS, or your player of choice.
For @vishaannyc, journalistic collaborations are about inspiring people about what’s possible — about injecting optimism and a sense of tangible, everyday joy back into a societal conversation laden with cynicism and abstraction.
Had a great conversation about my new book with @UncertainPod. We debunk myths, talk about the chaos of history, and even get into the Iran deal. Available to listen to here: https://t.co/ybWCpEFu8V
