By their own definition, asoiaf is low fantasy, as its connected to our world (wot5k = war of the roses)

Westeros and the vast majority of the plot is a mishmash of medieval English history. Magic is rare, and widely considered extinct. Unlike lotr, the storytelling is realistic, not mythic
